Neo Power Black Shield COP 5.4

Neo Power currently publishes a COP of 5.4 for all three Black Shield capacities under its stated test conditions.

COP measures useful heat delivered compared with electrical energy consumed by the refrigeration system at a defined operating point.

It should not be read as a guarantee that every home will receive exactly 5.4 units of heat for every unit of electricity throughout the year.

Black Shield and Black Diamond are different generations. The earlier Black Diamond platform publishes COP around 4.33. Do not apply the newer Black Shield 5.4 figure to an older Black Diamond unit.

Neo Power DC Inverter Heat Pump

Black Shield uses an inverter-driven compressor so compressor output can be varied rather than operating only at one fixed speed.

This allows the refrigeration system to adapt more closely to operating conditions and hot-water demand.

Neo Power positions the inverter platform as one of the main upgrades from the earlier Black Diamond generation.

Black Shield Operating Modes

Standard

Normal heat-pump operation for everyday stored hot water.

Eco

Prioritises efficient heat-pump-only operation.

Hybrid

Uses the heat pump together with the 1.6kW electric element for faster recovery when required.

Sterilization

Raises stored-water temperature into the higher temperature range for programmed disinfection.

How Hot Can Neo Power Black Shield Get?

Current Black Shield documentation lists a maximum water temperature up to approximately 75Β°C where the electric heating function is used.

Standard and Eco heat-pump operating ranges are lower, while Hybrid and sterilization functions allow higher temperatures.

Water supplied to showers and other personal-hygiene fixtures is separately controlled by compliant tempering equipment.

How Loud Is Neo Power Black Shield?

Current manufacturer material lists approximately 42–48dB depending on operating mode.

Neo Power highlights Silent operation at approximately 42dB.

Real perceived sound also depends on installation location, nearby walls, fences, side passages, bedrooms and neighbouring properties.

Neo Power Wi-Fi & Smart Life App

Black Shield includes Wi-Fi control through the Smart Life App and a colour touch-screen controller on the unit.

Remote control and scheduling make it easier to coordinate water heating with rooftop solar PV and household usage patterns.

Neo Power Heat Pump with Solar PV

Heat-pump hot water can pair especially well with rooftop solar PV because the system can be scheduled to heat during daytime generation.

Black Shield's rated heat-pump input is only around half a kilowatt under the published test condition, making normal compressor operation relatively easy for a residential solar system to cover when sufficient generation is available.

The tank then stores that daytime solar energy as hot water for use later.

Neo Power Black Diamond Heat Pumps

Black Diamond is the earlier Neo Power all-in-one R290 generation and remains important for existing installations, replacement searches and available older stock.

The range includes 210L, 260L and 315L models.

Black Diamond 210L

Model NA31-210A with approximately 2.9kW heating output, R290 refrigerant and published COP around 4.33.

Neo Power Premium Split Heat Pump

Neo Power now also offers a premium split heat-pump system that separates the heat-pump unit from the storage tank.

The current package combines an R32 outdoor heat pump with an Australian-made 316 marine-grade stainless-steel tank manufactured in Morwell, Victoria by Earthworker Energy Cooperative.

The tank can be positioned separately from the heat-pump module, providing more flexibility where an all-in-one unit does not fit conveniently.

This is a materially different product from Black Shield. Black Shield is an integrated R290 glass-lined all-in-one heat pump. The premium split package uses a separate R32 heat pump and Australian-made 316 stainless-steel tank.

Neo Power Australian-Made Stainless-Steel Tank

The premium split system uses a 316 marine-grade stainless-steel tank made by Earthworker Energy Cooperative in Morwell, Victoria.

Unlike glass-lined cylinders, the stainless tank does not rely on a conventional sacrificial anode for corrosion protection.

Current Neo Power material lists a 15-year tank warranty and six-year heat-pump warranty for this split configuration, subject to the manufacturer's terms.

Neo Power Rooftop & Horizontal Heat Pump

Neo Power also offers a horizontal split heat-pump arrangement for properties where conventional upright ground-level storage is difficult.

The low-profile tank can be installed horizontally on a suitable roof or at ground level, with the heat-pump module separated from storage.

Current manufacturer information lists a 316 stainless-steel tank and a 2.4kW electric backup element.

What Size Neo Power Heat Pump Do I Need?

Neo Power publishes occupant guides, but JR sizes stored hot water using actual expected demand rather than occupant count alone.

Our starting allowances are approximately 40 litres per person per day for light use, 50 litres for average use, 65 litres for high use and around 80 litres for excessive demand.

Black Shield 210L

Best considered for lower-demand homes, couples and small households where peak shower demand remains modest.

Black Shield 270L

Strong middle-ground option for average families and typical 3–4-bedroom homes.

Black Shield 320L

Better suited to larger families, multiple bathrooms, bathtubs and heavier peak demand.

Neo Power Black Shield Tank Construction

Black Shield uses a glass-lined storage tank with sacrificial-anode corrosion protection.

This is different from Neo Power's premium split system, which uses an Australian-made 316 stainless-steel cylinder.

The distinction matters for long-term maintenance, water chemistry and warranty requirements.

Neo Power Black Shield Warranty

Current Black Shield manufacturer information lists seven years parts warranty on the glass-lined tank.

Refrigeration components, controller and sensor leads are currently listed with five years parts warranty.

Standard parts-and-labour coverage is listed at two years, subject to the full Neo Power warranty conditions.

Older JR wording should not be used for current Black Shield warranty. The current manufacturer warranty is more detailed than simply describing the system as having β€œaround five years” coverage.

Black Shield Installation Requirements

Current Neo Power instructions specify 220–240V single-phase electricity with a dedicated 10A circuit breaker for Black Shield.

The unit requires a level supporting base, adequate airflow, condensate drainage, compliant hot-water valves and service clearance.

Because R290 is a flammable natural refrigerant, indoor installation also requires minimum room-volume and ventilation conditions to be satisfied.

Black Shield Minimum indoor room volume
210L Approx. 35mΒ³
270L Approx. 55mΒ³
320L Approx. 75mΒ³

Replacing Electric Hot Water with Neo Power

Conventional electric-storage replacement remains one of the clearest applications for a Neo Power heat pump.

Instead of generating all stored heat through electrical resistance, the heat pump moves thermal energy from ambient air into the water.

This can substantially reduce purchased electricity where the system is correctly sized and spends most of its operating time in efficient heat-pump mode.

Neo Power Solar Hot Water

Neo Power is not exclusively a heat-pump brand.

Its broader current range includes flat-panel and evacuated-tube solar thermal hot-water systems, including split, low-profile and close-coupled configurations.

Split flat-panel systems use roof collectors and a ground-level tank with a pump and solar controller, with electric or gas boosting available depending on the configuration.

Neo Power Continuous-Flow Gas Hot Water

Neo Power's broader range also includes continuous-flow gas water heaters.

These operate completely differently from a heat pump: water is heated as it passes through the appliance rather than being stored in a large tank.

Neo Power Rebates & STCs

Eligible Neo Power heat pumps are registered for federal Small-scale Technology Certificates where the exact approved model and installation meet current scheme rules.

Certificate quantities and other state-based incentives vary by product, location and installation date.

Who Is Neo Power?

Neo Power states that it was established in 2010 and supplies heat pumps, solar hot water and gas water-heating products across Australia through a national distributor network.

The current range now extends from value-focused integrated heat pumps through to higher-specification inverter products and Australian-made stainless-steel split-system storage.

Neo Power Installation Brisbane & Gold Coast

JR Gas & Water installs suitable Neo Power hot-water systems throughout Brisbane, the Gold Coast and eligible South East Queensland service areas.

Installation needs to account for household sizing, airflow, noise, condensate drainage, electrical supply, supporting base, plumbing, tempering, water pressure and access for future service.

Split and rooftop Neo Power systems have additional placement and pipework requirements compared with the integrated Black Shield and Black Diamond platforms.
