Compare usable demand rather than the model number alone.
Both products can produce more usable mixed hot water than their nominal
stored volume, and recovery changes with ambient temperature and the
selected operating mode.
What Size Aquatech Heat Pump Do I Need?
JR sizes stored hot water around actual household demand rather than relying
only on the number of occupants.
Our starting allowances are approximately 40 litres per person per day for
light use, 50 litres for average use and 65 litres for higher hot water
demand.
We then consider the heat pump's recovery rate, baths, shower duration,
simultaneous demand and whether the system will operate continuously or
mainly during a scheduled tariff or solar-PV window.
RAPID/X6
Best considered where household demand is moderate and the smaller
physical height or storage capacity better suits the property.
DYNAMIC/X8
Provides greater storage and usable mixed-water capacity for larger
households, more bathrooms or heavier peak demand.
Aquatech R290 Heat Pump Technology
RAPID/X6 and DYNAMIC/X8 use R290 refrigerant. The refrigeration cycle
extracts thermal energy from the surrounding air and transfers it into the
stored water.
This differs from conventional electric storage, where almost all heat is
created directly by an electric-resistance element.
R290 is a natural refrigerant with very low global-warming potential and is
now widely used across modern heat pump water heaters.
How Efficient Are Aquatech Heat Pumps?
Heat-pump efficiency changes significantly with ambient temperature.
Aquatech's technical data shows COP increasing as outside conditions become
warmer.
Under the manufacturer's test data, COP can rise to around 5 under warmer
test conditions, while performance is lower in cold ambient conditions.
This makes South East Queensland particularly suitable for heat-pump hot
water because much of the year provides relatively favourable ambient-air
conditions.
COP is not a fixed annual saving.
Real electricity consumption depends on incoming-water temperature, ambient
air, household demand, operating mode, thermostat setting and how often the
backup element runs.
How Loud Is an Aquatech Heat Pump?
Aquatech's detailed specification lists operating sound pressure around
42 dB(A) under its stated test methodology for both RAPID/X6 and
DYNAMIC/X8.
That figure should not be treated as identical to perceived noise at every
installation. Walls, fences, narrow side passages and hard surfaces can
reflect compressor and fan noise.
Positioning remains important where the unit is close to bedrooms,
neighbours or enclosed outdoor spaces.
Aquatech Tank Construction
Current Aquatech technical information lists a carbon-steel inner cylinder
protected with a Class X vitreous-enamel coating.
Unlike many conventional enamel tanks using a replaceable sacrificial
magnesium anode, Aquatech uses a non-sacrificial impressed-current anode
system.
The impressed-current system applies a small electrical charge for
corrosion protection and is designed to avoid routine sacrificial-anode
replacement.
Aquatech is not a stainless-steel tank system.
The current tank uses steel with vitreous-enamel protection plus an
impressed-current anode.
Aquatech Heating Modes
Current Aquatech technical information lists several heating modes designed
to balance efficiency, recovery and backup heating.
Eco
Prioritises efficient heat-pump operation where rapid recovery is not
required.
Standard
Normal day-to-day heat-pump operation balancing recovery and
efficiency.
Hybrid
Allows the system to combine available heating methods where additional
recovery is required.
Hybrid+
Higher-recovery operation intended for heavier hot water demand.
Element
Uses the 1.8kW resistance element independently where required.
Aquatech Wi-Fi & Smart Controls
RAPID/X6 and DYNAMIC/X8 include connected controls, allowing system
operation to be monitored and adjusted from a compatible app.
Aquatech's technical documentation identifies Tuya as the current app
platform and includes timer-controlled operation.
Scheduling can be particularly useful where the homeowner wants the heat
pump operating during lower-cost tariff periods or periods of strong solar
PV generation.
Aquatech Heat Pump with Solar PV
Aquatech heat pumps can be scheduled to operate during daylight hours when
a property has rooftop solar PV.
In this arrangement the solar panels generate electricity, the heat pump
consumes some of that electricity to heat the water, and the storage tank
effectively stores part of that daytime energy as hot water for later use.
Aquatech specifically promotes timer-controlled heating as a way to better
utilise household solar generation.
Does Aquatech Have an Electric Backup Element?
Yes. Both RAPID/X6 and DYNAMIC/X8 use a 1.8kW electric-resistance element
alongside the heat pump.
The element can support higher-recovery operating modes and provides an
alternative means of heating where heat-pump operation is unavailable or
unsuitable.
Regular reliance on resistance heating will increase electricity
consumption compared with normal heat-pump operation.
Aquatech Electrical Requirements
Current Aquatech documentation lists RAPID/X6 and DYNAMIC/X8 for normal
220β240V single-phase electricity with a minimum 10A circuit rating.
The heat-pump compressor itself draws substantially less power than a
conventional large electric-storage element, while the integrated 1.8kW
backup element increases demand when operating.
The actual installation still needs to comply with the model requirements
and current Australian electrical standards.
Aquatech Water Temperature
Current technical data lists a maximum heat-pump water temperature around
60Β°C and up to approximately 70Β°C when the electric element is used.
Delivered water temperature at bathrooms and fixtures is separately
controlled by the home's plumbing and tempering requirements.
Aquatech Heat Pumps in Brisbane & Gold Coast Conditions
Current Aquatech technical information lists heat-pump operation across an
ambient range of approximately -5Β°C to 43Β°C.
Brisbane and Gold Coast conditions are normally well within that operating
range and generally provide favourable ambient temperatures for air-source
heat-pump performance.
The system still needs good airflow around the evaporator and should not be
installed in a confined space without meeting the manufacturer's
requirements.
Replacing Electric Hot Water with Aquatech
Conventional electric-storage replacement is one of the most logical
applications for an Aquatech heat pump.
The home retains stored hot water but changes the primary heating method
from electric resistance to an air-source heat pump.
Because heat pumps have different recovery characteristics from electric
cylinders, JR does not recommend simply matching the old tank's litre
capacity.
Aquatech Heat Pump Rebates & STCs
Eligible approved Aquatech heat pump installations can qualify for
Small-scale Technology Certificates where the exact model and installation
meet current scheme requirements.
Aquatech publishes STC rebate values by climate zone for its current heat
pumps. The number and financial value of certificates can change, so the
applicable benefit should be checked at the time of installation.
