SWITCHBOARD SURGE PROTECTION

Whole House Surge Protection Installation Brisbane & Gold Coast

JR Gas & Water provides Whole House Surge Protection installation for eligible homes across Brisbane, the Gold Coast and surrounding South East Queensland service areas.

Installed at the property's electrical switchboard, a surge protection device is designed to limit transient overvoltages before they reach connected electrical and electronic equipment throughout the protected installation.

That can provide an additional layer of protection for equipment such as electronic hot water systems, heat pumps, pumps, filtration controls, air conditioners, kitchen appliances, entertainment equipment and other sensitive electronics.

Quick answer: whole-house surge protection is installed at the switchboard to help limit damaging transient voltage spikes. It can reduce the risk of electrical and electronic damage from suitable surge events, but it cannot guarantee that every appliance will survive every electrical event or direct lightning scenario.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why Install Whole House Surge Protection?

Protect Sensitive Electronics

Modern appliances increasingly rely on circuit boards, controllers, sensors, inverters and other electronics that can be vulnerable to transient overvoltage.

Protect More Than One Appliance

Switchboard-level protection is intended to provide broader protection across the circuits covered by the installed surge protection arrangement rather than protecting only one plug-in appliance.

JR Warranty Requirement

Suitable JR-approved surge protection is part of the current requirements for electrical and electronic components to remain eligible under JR's Lifetime Workmanship & Extended Product Labour Warranty pathway.

WHAT IT PROTECTS

What Can Whole House Surge Protection Help Protect?

Heat pump hot water systems with electronic controllers, compressors and inverter components.

Electric hot water controls including timers, relays and electronic control equipment.

Water filtration electronics including UV systems, pumps and compatible electronic controllers.

Air conditioning systems containing electronic control and inverter components.

Kitchen and household appliances connected to the protected electrical installation.

Home electronics such as televisions, networking equipment and other sensitive devices.

Protection depends on the electrical installation. A surge protector cannot be assumed to cover every circuit or tariff arrangement unless the installed configuration has been designed to do so.

HOW IT WORKS

How Does a Whole House Surge Protector Work?

A surge protection device responds to short-duration transient overvoltage events within its design capability.

Normal Voltage

During normal operation, the electrical installation continues to supply connected equipment in the usual way.

Transient Surge Occurs

A short-duration voltage spike can arise from switching events, network disturbances or electrical storm activity.

SPD Limits the Surge

The surge protection device provides a controlled path that helps limit the transient voltage reaching downstream equipment.

“Surge protection” does not mean the device stores or absorbs unlimited electrical energy. Its role is to limit transient overvoltage within the capability of the installed protection system.

LIGHTNING & GRID EVENTS

Does Surge Protection Protect Against Lightning?

Whole-house surge protection can form part of the protection strategy for transient overvoltages associated with electrical storms and network events.

It should not, however, be presented as a guarantee against all lightning damage. A severe or direct lightning event can exceed the capability of normal switchboard surge protection, and properties with specific lightning exposure may require additional protection measures.

No surge protector can guarantee that every appliance will survive every surge or lightning event. The objective is risk reduction, not absolute protection from unlimited overvoltage.

JR LIFETIME WARRANTY

Surge Protection & JR's Lifetime Warranty Pathway

JR Gas & Water's current Lifetime Workmanship & Extended Product Labour Warranty terms specifically address electrical and electronic component protection.

JR-Approved Protection

To include eligible electrical or electronic components under the extended warranty pathway, a suitable surge protector must be installed by JR Gas & Water or JR's nominated electrical contractor.

Five-Year Requirement

JR's current terms state that the surge-protection requirement must be re-completed every five years to maintain eligible electrical and electronic component coverage.

Earlier Replacement If Needed

The device must be replaced earlier if it fails, is damaged, is no longer suitable or JR determines that replacement is required.

Installing surge protection once does not create permanent lifetime coverage by itself. JR's current warranty pathway also includes applicable check-ups, servicing and other product-specific maintenance requirements.

MULTIPLE TARIFFS

Why Might a Home Need More Than One Surge Protector?

Some properties have more than one electrical supply arrangement or tariff-controlled circuit. Depending on how the switchboard and circuits are configured, one surge protection device may not cover every part of the installation that requires protection.

General Supply

The main household supply may serve lighting, power points and normal household electrical equipment.

Controlled-Load Circuit

Electric hot water or another large load may be supplied through a separate controlled tariff or switching arrangement.

Installation Assessment

The switchboard arrangement should be checked so the electrician can determine how many surge protection devices are required for the intended coverage.

JR's current product page specifically notes that multiple-tariff homes may require additional surge protection devices. The number required depends on the actual switchboard and tariff arrangement.

HOT WATER PROTECTION

Why Surge Protection Matters for Modern Hot Water Systems

Hot water systems are increasingly electronic. Heat pumps, smart controllers and some modern electric or gas systems can contain substantially more electronics than a traditional resistance-only storage tank.

Heat Pumps

Heat pumps can contain compressor electronics, control boards, sensors, fan controls and other electrical components.

Smart Hot Water Controls

Timers, relays, Wi-Fi controls and energy-management equipment add additional electronic components to the hot water installation.

Electronic Gas Systems

Continuous-flow gas water heaters also use electronic ignition, sensors and control boards even though gas supplies the primary heating energy.

Surge protection is preventative electrical protection rather than a hot water performance upgrade. It does not increase recovery, storage capacity or energy efficiency.

FILTRATION & PUMP SYSTEMS

Surge Protection Beyond Hot Water

The same switchboard-level protection can also be relevant where JR installs electrical or electronic filtration and pumping equipment.

UV Filtration

UV water-treatment systems use electronic power supplies and lamp-control equipment that may benefit from suitable electrical protection.

Water Pumps

Pump installations can incorporate motors, controllers, pressure electronics or variable-speed components.

Smart Controls

Monitoring devices and electronic water-management controls can add further sensitive components to the installation.

INSTALLATION

How Is Whole House Surge Protection Installed?

The surge protection device is installed at the electrical switchboard as part of the property's fixed electrical installation.

Switchboard Assessment

The existing board, supply arrangement and any separate tariff circuits are checked before the required protection arrangement is confirmed.

Electrical Installation

The surge protection equipment is installed by an appropriately licensed electrical contractor into the applicable switchboard arrangement.

Testing

The completed work is checked as part of the electrical installation before being returned to service.

Whole-house surge protection is not a DIY plug-in accessory. It forms part of the switchboard installation and requires appropriately licensed electrical work.

BRISBANE

Whole House Surge Protection Installation Brisbane

JR Gas & Water provides whole-house surge protection across eligible Greater Brisbane service areas.

It can be particularly relevant when installing electronic hot water equipment, heat pumps, filtration controls or other electrical products where JR's current extended warranty pathway requires suitable surge protection for eligible electrical and electronic component coverage.

Properties with controlled-load electric hot water or multiple tariff arrangements should have the switchboard configuration checked before the final protection layout is confirmed.

GOLD COAST

Whole House Surge Protection Installation Gold Coast

JR Gas & Water also provides whole-house surge protection across eligible Gold Coast service areas.

The installation is completed at the property's electrical switchboard, with the existing supply and tariff arrangement considered before the final number and location of surge protection devices are determined.

Where surge protection is being installed alongside a new JR hot water or filtration system, the protection requirements should be considered as part of the complete electrical installation rather than as an unrelated accessory.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Whole House Surge Protection FAQs
