A Good Choice If...
You want an integrated heat-pump system, prefer built-in Wi-Fi and app control, have suitable outdoor space and want the additional flexibility of a 1.6kW electric element.
Consider Another Option If...
Your household has substantially higher hot water demand, the proposed position has inadequate airflow, the 1884mm unit height is unsuitable, or a split heat pump or larger-capacity model better fits the property.
JR Should Check First If...
You are relocating the system, changing from gas or solar, installing internally, have restricted access, need electrical upgrades or are unsure whether the existing slab, drainage, valves and power supply are suitable.
How Many People Does the Emerald Pro 270L Suit?
Emerald's current sizing material positions the 270L All-In-One Pro around 4–5 people. That is useful as a starting point, but occupant count should not be the only sizing factor.
A home with four short, staggered showers can place less demand on a system than a home with fewer occupants but multiple bathrooms, long showers, baths or heavy simultaneous use. Recovery performance also matters alongside storage volume.
JR can assess normal shower use, bathroom count, household routines and the system being replaced before confirming whether the 270L model is appropriate or whether a different capacity would better suit the property.
How Does the Emerald Pro 270L E-Heater Work?
The Emerald Pro uses a refrigeration cycle to extract heat from surrounding air and transfer that energy into the water stored in the integrated cylinder.
In the EE-HWS-A1-270E, the compressor, fan, heat exchanger and 270L storage tank form one appliance. Emerald uses DC inverter technology to electronically control heat-pump operation.
During normal Standard operation, the heat pump heats the water without relying on the resistance element. Silent mode reduces the heat-pump operating output and sound level. Booster mode combines the heat pump with the 1.6kW electric element, while E-Heater mode uses the electric element as the heating source.
Emerald specifies Silent, Booster and E-Heater as one-shot functions that return to Standard mode after their applicable operating cycle or control period.

What Is Required to Install the Emerald Pro 270L E-Heater?
A heat pump needs suitable airflow, drainage, electrical provision and service space in addition to the normal plumbing requirements of a storage water heater.
What's Included With Emerald Pro 270L E-Heater Installation?
Standard Installation
The applicable JR package can include supply of the Emerald Pro 270L E-Heater, positioning at a suitable installation location, connection to suitable existing hot and cold-water services and completion of the plumbing work included in the selected package.
Compliance & Commissioning
The system is connected, tested and commissioned for normal operation. Plumbing and electrical work must be completed in accordance with the applicable installation requirements by appropriately licensed trades.
Possible Additional Work
Electrical circuit upgrades, additional cabling, valve changes, pressure-control work, new drainage, additional pipework, new support bases, relocation, difficult access or internal installations may require additional work outside the standard package.
How Much Does Emerald Pro 270L E-Heater Installation Cost?
Current supplied-and-installed pricing is shown in JR's live product and installation selector above. This keeps changing product prices, installation packages, incentives and booking availability inside the live Shopify system.
The final Emerald Pro 270L installation cost depends on the existing system, location, electrical supply, valves, pressure conditions, condensate drainage, support base, plumbing changes, access and whether the new unit remains in the existing hot water position.
A straightforward external replacement of an electric storage system can involve less additional work than a relocation, gas conversion, solar conversion or installation where the existing electrical and plumbing services need upgrading.
Emerald Pro 270L E-Heater Installation Brisbane
JR Gas & Water supplies and installs the Emerald Pro 270L E-Heater in Brisbane for suitable replacements and heat-pump upgrades.
For Brisbane homes replacing an existing external electric storage cylinder, the existing position can be a practical starting point where it provides sufficient airflow, drainage, support and access. However, the Emerald's 1884mm height and heat-pump airflow requirements mean a location suitable for a conventional cylinder does not automatically suit the new system.
The existing electrical connection should also be assessed before installation. The E-Heater model includes a 1.6kW resistance element in addition to the heat-pump components, so the complete electrical arrangement needs to suit the manufacturer's current requirements.
JR installs across eligible Greater Brisbane locations and surrounding areas including Logan, Ipswich, Moreton Bay and Redlands.
Emerald Pro 270L E-Heater Installation Gold Coast
JR Gas & Water also supplies and installs the Emerald Pro 270L E-Heater on the Gold Coast across eligible service areas.
The all-in-one design can provide a clean replacement layout because the storage cylinder and heat-pump equipment remain in one appliance. The proposed location still needs appropriate airflow, condensate drainage and access for maintenance.
Installation access is also important because the 270L unit weighs approximately 132kg empty. Narrow side access, stairs, retaining walls or difficult paths can affect how practical the preferred location is before the appliance is even commissioned.
Properties close to the coast should also be installed and maintained with Emerald's current environmental guidance in mind, particularly where salt exposure may affect equipment life.
Can the Emerald Pro 270L Replace My Existing Hot Water System?
Replacing Electric Storage
This can be a practical upgrade pathway where the existing location has enough space, suitable plumbing, drainage, airflow and electrical provision.
Replacing Another Heat Pump
An existing heat-pump position may be suitable, but dimensions, electrical requirements, condensate drainage and airflow should still be confirmed.
Replacing Gas Hot Water
A gas-to-heat-pump change is a technology conversion and usually requires electrical and plumbing assessment rather than a simple like-for-like replacement.
Replacing Solar Hot Water
A solar-to-heat-pump conversion can be possible, but the existing tank, roof-mounted components, solar pipework and new heat-pump position need to be considered as part of the overall scope.
Relocating the System
A new location can require additional pipework, cabling, drainage and a suitable support base and should therefore be assessed separately from a standard replacement.
Internal Installation
Emerald states that indoor installations need to comply with the applicable requirements for heat-pump systems. Internal installations should be assessed rather than treated as a standard external replacement.
What Do Standard, Silent, Booster and E-Heater Modes Do?
Standard Mode
Normal heat-pump-only operation. Emerald publishes 2.8kW heating capacity, 0.58kW rated input, COP 4.8 and 58L/h recharge for the 270L platform under its stated test conditions.
Silent Mode
Reduces heat-pump operating output and sound. Emerald publishes 45dB(A), 2.0kW heating capacity and 41L/h recharge in this mode under its test conditions.
Booster Mode
On the E-Heater model, the heat pump and electric element can operate together to increase recovery. Emerald publishes a recharge rate of 108L/h under its stated test conditions.
E-Heater Mode
Uses the 1.6kW electric element as the heating source. Emerald publishes a recharge rate of 33L/h in this mode under its stated test conditions.
How Efficient Is the Emerald Pro 270L E-Heater?
Emerald publishes a Standard-mode COP of 4.8 for the 270L Pro under its stated laboratory conditions. COP compares the amount of heat delivered with the electrical input used by the heat-pump system during a specified test.
Actual electricity consumption changes with ambient temperature, incoming water temperature, household demand, operating mode and the amount of electric-element use.
Emerald markets its heat-pump range as capable of reducing hot water energy costs by up to 80% compared with conventional electric storage under its comparison assumptions. That is a manufacturer claim rather than a guaranteed household saving.
Homes with rooftop solar PV may also choose to schedule heat-pump operation during solar-generation periods, depending on the household's electricity tariff, solar output and normal hot water use.
Emerald Pro 270L E-Heater vs Other Hot Water Options
| Option | Best Suited To | Main Difference |
|---|---|---|
| Emerald Pro 270L E-Heater | Average family demand with smart control and extra electric-boost flexibility | 270L, Wi-Fi, inverter heat pump and 1.6kW electric element |
| Emerald Pro 270L Without E-Heater | Homes wanting the same basic storage size without a dedicated resistance element | No E-Heater operating mode |
| Emerald Pro 320L E-Heater | Larger households or higher stored-hot-water demand | Greater 320L storage capacity and taller appliance |
| Split Heat Pump | Properties where separating the compressor and cylinder better suits the installation | Tank and heat-pump unit are installed separately |
| Electric Storage | Homes prioritising simple conventional storage | Uses resistance heating rather than primarily extracting heat from ambient air |
The correct choice depends on household demand, site layout, electrical requirements, available airflow, preferred controls and whether an all-in-one or split layout better suits the property.

How Do STC Rebates Work?
Small-scale Technology Certificates, or STCs, are part of the Australian Government’s renewable energy scheme. Eligible heat pump and solar hot water systems can generate STCs, which carry a monetary value. JR Gas & Water applies this value as an upfront rebate so customers see a reduced out-of-pocket price on eligible products rather than needing to claim anything later themselves.
For clarity, JR Gas & Water uses a flat-rate STC rebate of $1,000 including GST on eligible systems. This means the price shown online is the customer’s out-of-pocket price after the rebate has already been applied. It is not the full gross system price before the rebate.
As an example, if a system is advertised online at $4,000, the gross system price is $5,000, less the $1,000 STC rebate, leaving the advertised out-of-pocket amount of $4,000.
This upfront rebate is offered on the basis that the installation will be completed compliantly, the system will remain eligible for STCs, and JR Gas & Water will be able to create, process, and receive the value of those certificates after installation. We handle the STC paperwork and process behind the scenes, but the rebate is conditional and relies on the job proceeding correctly from start to finish.
Who Is Eligible?
In general, customers may be eligible for the STC rebate where they are purchasing an approved solar hot water system, heat pump hot water system, or other eligible product that qualifies under the applicable scheme rules at the time of installation.
Eligibility generally requires that:
the product itself is STC eligible,
the installation address is eligible,
the system is installed in Australia,
the installation is completed in a compliant manner,
the system is capable of being properly verified,
and the customer provides any required information, declarations, signatures, and supporting documents needed to process the STCs.
Where JR Gas & Water advertises an eligible system with the rebate already applied, the customer is agreeing that the STCs will be assigned to JR Gas & Water or its nominated agent as part of the sale. That assignment is what allows the rebate to be applied upfront instead of the customer paying full price.
When Is the Rebate Not Available or Not Valid?
The STC rebate is not an automatic discount in every situation. It is only available where the installation proceeds fully and remains eligible for STC creation and assignment.
A customer may not be eligible, or may be required to repay the rebate amount, where:
the order is cancelled after rebate pricing has been applied,
the customer declines installation,
the site is not ready,
access is refused,
the installation cannot proceed due to hazards, animals, obstructions, or unsafe conditions,
the customer wants to keep the STCs personally,
required paperwork is not signed or returned,
incorrect or incomplete information is provided,
the property or system turns out not to qualify,
the quoted eligible product is changed,
a third party interferes with, alters, completes, disconnects, reconnects, or modifies the installation,
required compliance or upgrade works are refused,
or the installation cannot be lawfully completed in a way that allows the STCs to be validly claimed.
This also includes situations where another contractor performs part of the work in a way that affects eligibility, or where changes made by the customer or another trade prevent JR Gas & Water from receiving the STC benefit that the upfront rebate was based on.
What Happens If the Customer Does Not Proceed?
Where a customer accepts pricing that already includes the STC rebate and then cancels, postpones, declines installation, refuses access, or otherwise prevents the installation from being completed, JR Gas & Water may recover the full $1,000 STC rebate amount in addition to any other applicable cancellation, postponement, restocking, freight, attendance, or administrative charges.
This is because the lower advertised price was offered on the basis that JR Gas & Water would receive the benefit of the STCs after compliant completion of the installation. If the job does not proceed, that STC benefit cannot be recovered by JR Gas & Water, so the rebate amount becomes payable.
Can the Customer Keep the STCs Instead?
Yes, but not at the rebate-adjusted price.
If the customer wishes to keep, trade, or claim the STCs themselves, they must notify JR Gas & Water in writing before the order is accepted, or at the latest before installation begins. In that case, the customer must pay the full $1,000 including GST rebate amount before installation unless otherwise agreed in writing.
Heat pump hot water systems are one of the most energy-efficient ways to heat water, using ambient air to produce hot water while consuming significantly less electricity than a conventional electric storage system.
Like any appliance with refrigeration and mechanical components, regular maintenance is essential to maximise efficiency, maintain reliable performance and support your manufacturer's warranty.
Many manufacturers recommend routine inspections and servicing throughout the life of the system.
Homeowner Maintenance – Every 6 Months
Every six months we recommend carrying out a simple visual inspection of your heat pump system.
Homeowners should:
- Carefully operate the Pressure & Temperature Relief (PTR) Valve.
- Operate the Expansion Control Valve (ECV) (where fitted).
- Remove leaves, grass and debris from around the outdoor unit.
- Ensure the air inlet and outlet remain clear.
- Check the condensate drain is free-flowing.
- Inspect for obvious water leaks or corrosion.
- Listen for any unusual noises during operation.
Why is this important?
Heat pumps rely on unrestricted airflow to operate efficiently.
Blocked airflow, dirty coils or seized safety valves can reduce efficiency, increase electricity consumption and place unnecessary strain on the compressor.
Operating the PTR and ECV valves every six months also helps prevent mineral build-up and confirms they continue to function correctly.
Important: Always follow your manufacturer's instructions when operating safety valves, as hot water will discharge during testing. If you're unsure, contact a licensed plumber.

Why These Components Matter
Sacrificial Anode
Most vitreous enamel-lined heat pump storage tanks contain a sacrificial anode.
The anode corrodes instead of the steel tank, protecting it from internal rust.
Replacing the anode at the recommended interval can significantly extend the life of your storage tank.
Pressure & Temperature Relief (PTR) Valve
The PTR valve protects the storage tank from excessive pressure and temperature.
Over time, mineral deposits may prevent the valve from operating correctly, making regular testing and replacement essential.
Expansion Control Valve (ECV)
Where fitted, the ECV controls pressure created as water expands during heating.
Maintaining the ECV helps protect both the storage tank and your home's plumbing system.
Airflow & Evaporator Coil
Unlike conventional electric systems, heat pumps rely on airflow across the evaporator coil to extract heat from the surrounding air.
Restricted airflow caused by leaves, dust or debris can:
- Reduce efficiency.
- Increase running costs.
- Extend heating times.
- Place additional strain on the compressor.
Keeping the unit clean helps maintain peak performance.
If Your Heat Pump Isn't Working
Before arranging a service, check the following:
- Ensure power is switched on.
- Check the circuit breaker and safety switch (RCD).
- Confirm the isolator near the unit is turned on.
- Check the controller for any fault or error codes.
- Ensure the air inlet and outlet are unobstructed.
- Remove any leaves or debris around the unit.
- Check for visible water leaks.
- Confirm the condensate drain is not blocked.
- Listen for unusual noises from the fan or compressor.
- Allow sufficient recovery time after heavy hot water usage.
If your system is still not producing hot water or is displaying fault codes, contact JR Gas & Water for professional diagnosis and repair.
General Signs Your System May Need Attention
Arrange a service if you notice:
- Little or no hot water.
- Unusual fan or compressor noises.
- Error codes on the controller.
- Constant water leaking.
- Reduced heating performance.
- Higher than normal electricity usage.
- Water taking much longer to heat.
- Visible corrosion.
- Repeated electrical trips.
- Restricted airflow due to dirt or debris.
Early servicing can often prevent more expensive repairs and prolong the life of your system.
Protect Your Warranty & Maximise System Life
Routine maintenance helps keep your heat pump operating safely, efficiently and reliably.
Following the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule can also assist in maintaining warranty coverage.
Failure to maintain your system may result in:
- Reduced energy efficiency.
- Increased electricity costs.
- Premature tank corrosion.
- Compressor strain.
- Shortened system lifespan.
- Unexpected breakdowns.
- Possible reduction or loss of manufacturer warranty, depending on the manufacturer's maintenance requirements.
Regular preventative maintenance is one of the best ways to protect your investment and ensure your heat pump continues delivering efficient hot water for many years.
Please note: Maintenance requirements vary between manufacturers and models. Always refer to your owner's manual for the maintenance schedule applicable to your heat pump hot water system. JR Gas & Water services all major heat pump brands in accordance with manufacturer recommendations where applicable.

Estimated annual savings are calculated by comparing the heat pump’s energy efficiency (measured as COP – Coefficient of Performance) against a standard electric hot water system with a COP of 1.0. For example, if a heat pump has a COP of 4.0, it uses 75% less electricity to deliver the same amount of hot water.
Savings are based on average household usage for a family of five on Tariff 11 (general usage tariff), using manufacturer-stated COP values. The higher the COP, the greater the energy savings.
Bonus savings: When paired with a solar PV system, energy costs can drop even further — with some households seeing up to 50% additional savings, especially when the heat pump runs during solar generation times.
Disclaimer:
All estimated savings are based on manufacturer-provided COP values and standard usage assumptions (e.g. a family of five on Tariff 11). These figures are intended as a general guide to help compare different hot water units and technologies. Actual savings may vary depending on your household’s usage, energy rates, and installation conditions. We recommend conducting your own research or consulting an energy advisor to assess what’s best for your specific setup.
