Above Ground vs Below Ground

The main difference between the installation options is access to the water service.

Above Ground

• Located beside the building, meter assembly or other accessible plumbing

Below Ground

Choose a below-ground option where the valve or water service must be accessed by digging into soil.

Below-ground pricing allows for the additional labour involved in normal excavation and reinstatement of the excavated soil.

Standard Pressure Testing Included

Pressure testing forms an important part of the installation.

Depending on the installation, JR Gas & Water may test the water pressure to help:

Standard Installation Requirements

The advertised installation options assume:

• A normal residential incoming water service

• The water service can be reasonably identified

• The pipework is serviceable

• The pipework is a normal compatible material and size

• Suitable access is available

• The water supply can be isolated

• No major rerouting of the property water service is required

• No unusual access equipment is required

• No major building work is required

Below-ground options additionally assume normal excavation conditions.

The below-ground variants include normal excavation through accessible soil required to reach the valve or suitable water-service connection.

Standard below-ground installation does not include:

• Concrete cutting

• Concrete removal

What If We Cannot Locate the Water Main?

For a new below-ground installation, the water service must be reasonably locatable.

If the property's underground pipework location is unknown and significant exploratory excavation or electronic service locating is required, this is outside the standard fixed-price installation.

The plumber can advise what additional investigation is required before proceeding.

Existing Pipework Condition

Standard installation assumes the existing water service is in suitable condition to accept the new valve.

Additional work may be required where the pipework is:

JR Gas & Water does not alter water-authority infrastructure where that work is required to be completed by the applicable authority.

If the problem is identified as being on the authority side of the property's water service, the customer may need to contact their water provider.

Pressure Limiting Valve & Hot Water Systems

Pressure control can also form part of a compliant hot water installation.

JR's existing hot-water documentation specifically identifies pressure limiting devices as one of the valve or compliance items that may need to be upgraded depending on the installation.

This product, however, is intended for standalone pressure limiting valve installation or replacement, rather than a valve being installed as part of a complete hot water system package.

What if my valve is above ground?

What if the valve is inside a meter box?

If it requires normal excavation or removal of soil to access the valve, use the below-ground option.

If it is fully exposed and readily accessible without excavation, it may qualify as above ground.

Do you test the water pressure?

Yes. Pressure testing is included as part of the service.

Can you install a valve if I don't already have one?

Yes. Select either New Installation – Above Ground or New Installation – Below Ground depending on the available water-service location.

What if the underground pipe can't be found?

Significant exploratory excavation or specialist service locating is outside the standard installation and may require additional work.

Will a pressure limiting valve fix poor water pressure?

Not necessarily.

A pressure limiting valve is designed to control excessive incoming pressure. Poor pressure or poor flow can have other causes, including restricted pipework, faulty valves, supply issues or ageing plumbing.

Can you replace a pressure limiting valve at the same time as other plumbing work?

Yes. Pressure limiting valves are a normal component within JR's wider plumbing, filtration and hot-water installation work.
