Envirosun TS170/20 Solar Hot Water Installation Brisbane & Gold Coast
JR Gas & Water supplies and installs the Envirosun TS170/20 thermosiphon solar hot water system across eligible Brisbane and Gold Coast properties where the roof, household demand and installation layout suit a compact roof-mounted solar system.
The current Envirosun electric-boosted specification is the TS170/20Se. Although commonly described as the 170L model, Envirosun currently specifies 167 litres of storage, one flat-plate solar collector and a 2.4kW electric booster.
Unlike a split solar system, the storage cylinder and collector are both mounted on the roof. Solar circulation occurs naturally by thermosiphon, so the solar circuit does not require a circulation pump.
Quick answer: the Envirosun TS170 is a compact roof-mounted thermosiphon solar hot water system designed for smaller homes. The current TS170/20Se has 167L storage, one E20HS flat-plate collector, a 140L electric boost volume, 2.4kW booster and a complete filled system mass of approximately 251kg. JR currently lists the product as a practical option for around 2–3 occupants, subject to actual household demand.
Envirosun TS170/20 at a Glance
What Is the Envirosun TS170/20?
The Envirosun TS170 is the compact model in Envirosun's roof-mounted thermosiphon solar range.
In a thermosiphon system, the solar collector heats water and the natural density difference between hotter and cooler water drives circulation between the collector and storage cylinder. This allows solar circulation without a powered pump.
Roof-Mounted Tank
The storage cylinder sits on the roof with the collector rather than at ground level.
Natural Solar Circulation
The thermosiphon principle moves heated water through the solar circuit without a separate circulation pump.
Electric Boost
The current TS170/20Se specification includes a 2.4kW electric booster for periods when solar input alone is insufficient.
Who Is the Envirosun TS170 Best For?
Smaller Households
Envirosun describes the TS170 as its compact system for small homes, while JR's current product sizing lists approximately 2–3 people.
Existing Roof-Mounted Solar
It can be particularly relevant where an older close-coupled or thermosiphon solar system is already installed and the roof remains suitable.
Homes Wanting Simple Solar
The thermosiphon design avoids a powered circulation pump in the solar loop and keeps the storage cylinder off the ground.

How Does Thermosiphon Solar Hot Water Work?
The Envirosun TS170 does not need a circulation pump to move water through the solar collector during normal solar operation.
As water in the collector heats up, its density decreases and the warmer water rises into the roof-mounted storage tank. Cooler water moves down toward the collector, creating a continuous natural circulation process while useful solar energy is available.
The stored hot water can then be supplied to the home, with the electric booster available when solar contribution is insufficient.
Envirosun TS170/20 Key Features
444 Grade Stainless Steel Tank
Envirosun currently specifies a 444 Grade ferritic stainless steel storage tank for the TS range.
Single Flat-Plate Collector
The current TS170 uses one high-performance flat-plate collector rather than the two- or three-panel arrangements used by larger TS models.
No Solar Circulation Pump
Natural thermosiphon flow moves water through the collector without requiring a separate solar circulation pump.
2.4kW Electric Booster
The current TS170/20Se includes electric boosting for periods when solar energy does not provide enough stored hot water.
STC Eligible
The current TS range is listed by Envirosun as Clean Energy Regulator accredited and eligible for STCs where current scheme conditions are met.
Compact TS Configuration
The 167L tank and single-collector layout make the TS170 substantially smaller than Envirosun's 304L TS300 systems.

How Much Roof Space Does the TS170 Need?
Envirosun currently publishes an overall TS170 system footprint of approximately 1,400 × 2,600 mm.
The collector itself is listed at approximately 1,060 × 2,000 mm, while the roof-mounted tank sits above the collector as part of the thermosiphon assembly.
The published footprint is only a starting point. The actual usable roof area also needs to account for roof shape, mounting hardware, obstructions, safe installer access and the ability to service or replace the system later.
Roof Structure & Loaded Weight
The complete current TS170 system is approximately 251 kg when full. That roof load is materially different from installing solar collectors alone.
Because the water storage cylinder is located on the roof, the proposed mounting area and supporting structure need to be appropriate for the installed system.
Collector Position, Orientation & Shading
A solar hot water system performs best when the collector receives strong useful solar exposure. Roof direction, pitch and shading from trees, neighbouring buildings, roof structures or other obstructions can affect solar contribution.
JR assesses the usable roof area rather than assuming that any open-looking roof section is suitable.
Solar Exposure
The collector needs useful access to sunlight rather than persistent heavy shading during the main solar-heating period.
Roof Layout
Valleys, ridges, skylights, vents, antennas and other roof features can restrict the practical installation area.
Safe Access
The mounting position must also be practical for installation, commissioning and future servicing.
Electric Booster Requirements
The current manufacturer specification for the TS170/20Se includes a 2.4kW electric booster and approximately 140 litres of boosted storage capacity.
The booster provides additional heating when solar contribution alone is insufficient, such as during extended poor weather or periods of higher-than-normal hot-water demand.
Is the TS170 Gas Boosted?
The current Envirosun specification table lists the TS170/20Se as the electric-boosted TS170 model.
Envirosun's current gas-boosted thermosiphon table lists TS300 and THX300 configurations but does not list a current TS170 gas-boosted equivalent.
Is the Envirosun TS170 Suitable for Frost-Prone Areas?
The standard TS170 is an open-circuit thermosiphon system.
Envirosun currently states that only its closed-circuit THX models are suitable and warranted for frost-prone areas. If the proposed installation location is subject to meaningful freezing conditions, the standard TS170 should not simply be assumed suitable.

A straightforward replacement of a compatible existing roof-mounted solar system can have a very different scope from converting an electric storage, gas or split solar system to a thermosiphon system.
Roof height, access, removal requirements, pipework, booster electrical work and the need for mounting or structural changes can all affect the final installation pathway.
STCs & Solar Hot Water Rebates
Envirosun currently lists its TS range as accredited with the Clean Energy Regulator and eligible to generate Small-scale Technology Certificates where the installation meets current scheme rules.
The number and value of certificates change over time and depend on factors including the exact approved system, installation date and geographic zone.
Envirosun TS170/20 Installation Brisbane
JR Gas & Water supplies and installs Envirosun roof-mounted solar hot water systems across eligible Brisbane homes where the roof and household demand suit the TS170 configuration.
For an existing thermosiphon replacement, JR considers whether the current roof location, mounting area, pipework and electric booster arrangement can support the replacement system or whether additional changes are required.
Eligible service coverage also extends through Logan, Ipswich, Moreton Bay and Redlands, with roof conditions and access assessed as part of the installation pathway.
Envirosun TS170/20 Installation Gold Coast
JR Gas & Water also supplies and installs the Envirosun TS170 across eligible Gold Coast properties where a compact roof-mounted thermosiphon system is appropriate.
Gold Coast roof layouts vary significantly between low-set homes, multi-storey properties, tile roofs, metal roofs and heavily shaded blocks. The installation therefore needs to be planned around usable solar exposure as well as safe access and structural suitability.
Where the existing system is difficult to remove or the proposed roof position is not practical, another solar layout or hot-water technology may provide a better installation pathway.
Replacing an Existing Roof-Mounted Solar System
The TS170 can be particularly attractive where an older small thermosiphon system has reached the end of its service life and the property is already configured for roof-mounted solar.
However, a replacement should not automatically reuse every part of the previous arrangement. Mounting hardware, valves, pipework, electrical boosting equipment, tempering and roof condition should be checked against the new installation.
Envirosun TS170 Efficiency & Running Costs
Envirosun currently promotes its TS solar range as capable of delivering up to 80%+ energy savings compared with its stated conventional hot-water comparison basis.
That is a range-level manufacturer claim rather than a guaranteed bill reduction for every TS170 installation.
Actual booster energy use depends on solar exposure, household hot-water consumption, weather, season, collector positioning, incoming water temperature and how the booster is controlled.
Envirosun TS170 Warranty
For qualifying residential Envirosun systems purchased from 26 June 2026, Envirosun currently states a 10-year product warranty and 2-year labour warranty for the original owner-occupier, subject to the manufacturer's current warranty conditions.
Envirosun currently specifies a 5-year product warranty and 2-year labour warranty for subsequent residential owners, while commercial and non-residential applications have different terms.
JR's Lifetime Warranty eligibility is separate from Envirosun's manufacturer product warranty and remains subject to JR's current terms and maintenance requirements.
Envirosun TS170 Maintenance
A roof-mounted solar system should remain accessible for periodic inspection and servicing throughout its working life.
Roof & Collector Condition
Collector glass, mounting hardware, pipe insulation and accessible roof components should remain in serviceable condition.
Valves & Drainage
Relief valves and discharge lines should remain functional and unobstructed, with servicing carried out according to current manufacturer requirements.
Booster Operation
The electric boost circuit and associated controls should remain operational for periods when solar contribution is insufficient.

Solar hot water systems are an efficient and environmentally friendly way to heat your water, using energy from the sun to reduce electricity or gas consumption. To continue operating efficiently and reliably, they require regular maintenance and servicing.
Like any hot water system, manufacturers recommend routine maintenance to maximise system performance, protect key components and support your manufacturer's warranty.
Homeowner Maintenance – Every 6 Months
Every six months we recommend carrying out a simple visual inspection of your solar hot water system.
Homeowners should:
- Carefully operate the Pressure & Temperature Relief (PTR) Valve.
- Operate the Expansion Control Valve (ECV) (where fitted).
- Check for water leaks around the storage tank and pipework.
- Inspect visible solar pipe insulation for deterioration.
- Ensure solar collectors are free from excessive dirt, leaves and debris where safely accessible.
- Check for signs of corrosion or rust.
- Listen for unusual noises from the system or circulating pump (where fitted).
Why is this important?
Regular operation of the PTR and ECV valves helps prevent mineral build-up that can cause the valves to seize or leak.
Keeping collectors and surrounding components clean allows the solar system to operate as efficiently as possible, while early detection of leaks or damaged insulation can prevent larger problems from developing.
Important: Always follow your manufacturer's instructions when operating safety valves, as hot water will discharge during testing. Do not climb onto your roof to inspect or clean collectors. If you're unsure, contact a licensed plumber.

Most solar storage hot water systems benefit from scheduled replacement of key components to maintain reliable performance and extend the life of the storage tank.
Our comprehensive 5-Year Service includes:
- Replacement of the sacrificial anode (where fitted).
- Replacement of the Pressure & Temperature Relief (PTR) Valve.
- Replacement of the Expansion Control Valve (ECV).
- Inspection of the solar collectors.
- Inspection of solar pipework and insulation.
- Inspection of circulating pump and controller (where fitted).
- Inspection of booster operation.
- Full operational testing.
- Leak and corrosion inspection.
Why These Components Matter
Sacrificial Anode
Most vitreous enamel-lined solar storage tanks contain a sacrificial anode.
The anode gradually corrodes instead of the steel storage tank, protecting it from internal rust. Once the anode has been consumed, the tank itself begins to corrode, which can eventually lead to leaks and tank failure.
Replacing the anode at the recommended interval is one of the best ways to extend the life of your hot water system.
Pressure & Temperature Relief (PTR) Valve
The PTR valve protects the storage tank by safely relieving excessive pressure and temperature.
Mineral deposits and normal wear can prevent the valve from operating correctly over time, making routine testing and replacement essential.
Expansion Control Valve (ECV)
Where fitted, the ECV controls pressure created as water expands during heating.
Maintaining the ECV helps reduce stress on the storage tank and plumbing system, contributing to a longer service life.
Solar Collectors & Pipework
Solar collectors capture the sun's energy to heat water, while insulated pipework transfers that heat to the storage tank.
Keeping collectors unobstructed and ensuring pipe insulation remains in good condition helps:
- Maximise solar efficiency.
- Reduce reliance on electric or gas boosting.
- Lower energy costs.
- Improve overall system performance.
If Your Hot Water System Isn't Working
Before arranging a service, check the following:
- Ensure power is switched on (for electric boosted systems).
- Confirm the gas supply is on (for gas boosted systems).
- Check circuit breakers and safety switches where applicable.
- Verify the booster has not been turned off.
- Inspect for visible water leaks.
- Ensure exposed solar pipe insulation has not been damaged.
- Check for controller fault codes (where fitted).
- Listen for unusual noises from the circulating pump (where fitted).
- Remember that several cloudy days may reduce solar heating, causing the booster to operate more frequently.
If your system is still not producing adequate hot water, contact JR Gas & Water for professional diagnosis and repair.
General Signs Your System May Need Attention
Arrange a service if you notice:
- Reduced hot water availability.
- Booster operating more frequently than usual.

Early servicing can often prevent more expensive repairs and extend the life of your solar hot water system.
Protect Your Warranty & Maximise System Life
Routine maintenance helps ensure your solar hot water system continues operating safely, efficiently and reliably.
Following the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule may also assist in maintaining warranty coverage.
Failure to maintain your system may result in:
- Premature tank corrosion.
- Reduced solar efficiency.
- Higher electricity or gas consumption.
- Leaking or seized safety valves.
- Unexpected loss of hot water.
