    What is an STC?

STC stands for Small-scale Technology Certificate. It is part of an Australian Government scheme designed to encourage energy-efficient hot water systems and other eligible renewable technologies.

    How does it work?

When your new system qualifies, STCs are created based on the expected energy savings and location of the installation. These certificates have a value, and that value is applied as an upfront discount to help reduce the installed cost.

How is it shown on our jobs?

For eligible systems, the STC value is already included as a flat rate $1000 upfront discount in the total installed price shown, so you do not need to claim it separately after installation.

    Who is eligible?

Eligibility generally applies to installations of approved systems at Australian homes and businesses where the product, property type, and installation details meet current STC program requirements.

If you are unsure whether your property or system qualifies, contact us before ordering and we can help confirm it.

ENVIROSUN HEAT PUMP INSTALLATION

Envirosun 250L Heat Pump Installation Brisbane & Gold Coast

JR Gas & Water supplies and installs the Envirosun 250L Heat Pump across eligible Brisbane and Gold Coast service areas. The current JR-listed 250EH1-15 is a monobloc air-source heat pump hot water system designed to provide family-sized stored hot water while using substantially less direct electric resistance heating than a conventional electric storage system.

The JR-listed model provides 250 litres of nominal storage, uses R134a refrigerant and includes heat-pump heating together with a 1.5kW auxiliary electric element. It is designed for households wanting to reduce hot water electricity consumption while retaining the convenience of a ground-mounted storage tank.

Heat pump installation needs to be assessed around more than tank capacity. Available airflow, drainage, electrical supply, water pressure, base condition, noise-sensitive locations, service access and household demand all affect whether the Envirosun 250L is the right replacement for a particular property.

Envirosun 250L Heat Pump at a glance: JR currently lists the 250EH1-15 as a 250L monobloc air-source heat pump hot water system suited to approximately 4–5 occupants, with 46dB listed noise, R134a refrigerant, timer control and a 10A plug-and-lead electrical connection. It can be particularly suitable for replacing electric storage hot water and for homes wanting to schedule water heating around daytime rooftop solar generation.

Installation Area

Professional supply and installation across eligible Brisbane and Gold Coast service areas.

Who Is the Envirosun 250L Heat Pump Best For?

Electric Storage Replacements

Existing electric storage installations can be a practical starting point for heat pump conversion because hot and cold water pipework and an electrical supply are often already available near the existing tank position.

Homes With Rooftop Solar

The built-in timer can be used to concentrate heating into daylight periods where suitable, helping households use more self-generated solar electricity instead of exporting it.

Medium Family Households

JR currently lists the 250EH1-15 for approximately 4–5 occupants. Actual suitability still depends on shower duration, baths, simultaneous use and overall hot water demand.

PRODUCT SUITABILITY

Is the Envirosun 250L Heat Pump Right for My Home?

A Good Choice If...

You want to replace conventional electric storage with a more energy-efficient system, have a suitable outdoor or well-ventilated installation position, need around 250L of storage and can provide appropriate drainage and electrical supply.

Consider Another Option If...

Your household regularly has very high simultaneous hot water demand, the proposed location has poor airflow, noise is likely to affect bedrooms or neighbours, or a larger storage system would better suit the household's consumption pattern.

JR Should Check First If...

You are converting from gas or solar hot water, relocating the tank, have restricted outdoor space, need electrical alterations, have inadequate drainage or are unsure whether the existing base and valves can be reused.

How Many People Does the Envirosun 250L Heat Pump Suit?

JR currently lists the 250EH1-15 for households of approximately 4–5 occupants. This is a useful starting point rather than a guarantee that every four or five-person household will have the same hot water requirements.

Actual sizing depends on shower duration, shower flow rates, bath use, number of bathrooms, simultaneous hot water demand, dishwasher and laundry habits, preferred heating schedule and how quickly stored hot water is used during peak periods.

A household with several long showers close together may require more effective storage and recovery than another household with the same number of people using hot water at different times. JR should therefore match the system to the home's real demand rather than occupant count alone.

How Does the Envirosun 250L Heat Pump Work?

The Envirosun 250L uses air-source heat pump technology. Instead of creating all of its heat directly through an electric resistance element, the heat pump extracts useful heat energy from the surrounding air and transfers it into the stored water through a refrigeration circuit.

The process is similar in principle to an air conditioner operating in reverse: ambient air provides heat → refrigerant absorbs and transfers that energy → the heat exchanger transfers energy into the tank water → heated water is stored for household use.

An auxiliary 1.5kW electric element is also incorporated to provide additional heating support when required. The system can therefore balance efficient heat pump operation with backup electric heating under selected operating conditions.

INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS

What Is Required to Install the Envirosun 250L Heat Pump?

A heat pump requires more installation consideration than a simple electric storage cylinder because the refrigeration system needs access to surrounding air and produces condensate while operating.

Suitable ground-level installation position
Stable and compliant support base
Adequate airflow around the heat pump
Practical future service access
Suitable condensate drainage
Compliant TPR valve drainage
Suitable hot and cold water connections
Correct pressure-control valves where required
Suitable electrical supply
Applicable electrical isolation and protection
Appropriate location away from noise-sensitive areas
Licensed plumbing and electrical work where required

The existing hot water position may be suitable for a straightforward replacement, but airflow, drainage and electrical compatibility still need to be checked rather than assumed.

What's Included With Envirosun 250L Heat Pump Installation?

Standard Installation

The selected JR installation package covers the applicable labour and materials shown in the live product selector. Depending on the package, this can include removal of the old system, positioning the heat pump, hot and cold water connections, valves, drainage and electrical work.

Compliance & Commissioning

The completed system is filled, commissioned and checked for correct operation. Plumbing connections, pressure control, relief drainage, condensate disposal, electrical supply and heat pump operation are checked as applicable.

Possible Additional Work

Relocation, extra copper pipework, a new support base, drainage modifications, pressure-limiting equipment, tempering valve replacement, electrical upgrades, new power supply or restricted access can increase the installation scope.

How Much Does Envirosun 250L Heat Pump Installation Cost?

Current supplied-and-installed Envirosun 250L pricing is shown in the live JR product and installation selector above. Keeping current pricing in the commercial product area means the displayed total can reflect the selected installation package, live product pricing and applicable options.

The final installation cost depends on the existing hot water system, package selected, whether the heat pump remains in the same position, pipework, valves, drainage, electrical requirements, support base, access and disposal of the previous system.

A compliant replacement of an existing heat pump in the same suitable location can require less work than converting gas or solar hot water to a heat pump or moving the new system to another part of the property.

Can the Envirosun 250L Use Rooftop Solar Power?

Yes. The heat pump still operates from the home's electrical supply rather than being wired directly to the solar panels, but its timer can be used to schedule water heating during periods when rooftop solar generation is available.

For many homes, late morning through early afternoon can be a practical operating window because solar production is often stronger during that part of the day. The ideal schedule depends on solar array size, other household loads, electricity tariff, feed-in tariff, battery storage and when the household normally uses hot water.

The aim is not simply to force every heat pump to run at midday. The better strategy is to coordinate hot water recovery with household demand while using self-generated solar electricity where practical.

BRISBANE INSTALLATION

Envirosun 250L Heat Pump Installation Brisbane

JR Gas & Water supplies and installs the Envirosun 250L Heat Pump across eligible Brisbane service areas. Existing outdoor electric storage systems can provide a practical conversion pathway where the tank position already has suitable plumbing, drainage, base conditions, electrical supply and sufficient airflow.

Brisbane's generally warm climate is favourable for air-source heat pump operation, but installation position still matters. A unit enclosed in a tight space or positioned directly beside a bedroom can create avoidable airflow or noise issues even where the climate itself suits heat pump technology.

JR assesses the actual property rather than treating every replacement as identical. Surrounding service areas can include Logan, Ipswich, Moreton Bay and Redlands subject to current installation availability.

GOLD COAST INSTALLATION

Envirosun 250L Heat Pump Installation Gold Coast

JR also supplies and installs the Envirosun 250L Heat Pump across eligible Gold Coast areas. Heat pumps are well suited to many local properties where there is a practical outdoor tank location, sufficient airflow and appropriate drainage.

Gold Coast replacements commonly need the same basic checks as Brisbane installations, but relocation can be particularly useful where an older tank was positioned in a confined side passage or another area that does not give the heat pump enough breathing room or convenient service access.

Where rooftop solar is installed, the timer can also be configured around the household's preferred daytime heating strategy rather than allowing the system to recover at less useful times.

Can the Envirosun 250L Replace My Existing Hot Water System?

Replacing Electric Storage

This is often one of the most practical conversion pathways. Existing plumbing and electrical infrastructure may be reusable where compliant, but airflow, drainage, base condition and electrical suitability still need to be confirmed.

Replacing Another Heat Pump

A heat-pump-to-heat-pump replacement can be relatively straightforward where the new unit fits the existing location and the valves, drainage, electrical supply and base remain suitable.

Replacing Gas Hot Water

Changing from gas storage or continuous flow introduces a new electric appliance and storage tank. A suitable tank position and electrical supply need to be established, and redundant gas services may also need to be addressed.

Replacing Solar Hot Water

A solar-to-heat-pump conversion can remove dependence on roof-mounted collectors, but existing solar components, roof pipework and ground-level plumbing may require removal or alteration as part of the job.

How Much Electricity Does the Envirosun 250L Heat Pump Use?

The JR-listed 250EH1-15 has an average heat pump input of approximately 495W and a maximum heat pump input of approximately 865W, with a 1.5kW auxiliary element available when required.

That does not mean the system consumes a fixed amount of electricity each day. Actual energy use depends on incoming water temperature, ambient air temperature, household hot water demand, set temperature, recovery requirements, operating mode and how often the auxiliary element is used.

The main efficiency advantage comes from moving heat from the surrounding air rather than creating all water-heating energy directly with an electric resistance element.

Envirosun 250L vs Envirosun M9 Heat Pumps

Feature 250L Classic Platform M9 200 M9 330
Storage Class 250L JR-listed / 246L current Classic 190L 330L
Household Position Medium household Smaller household Larger household
Refrigerant R134a R290 R290
Noise 46dB(A) 42dB(A) 42dB(A)
Heat Pump Technology Established Classic platform Newer M9 platform Newer M9 platform
Primary Reason to Consider Established mid-size 250L-class option Lower storage requirement and newer M9 platform Larger storage and newer M9 platform

The 250L-class system remains useful where a household needs more storage than the M9 200 but does not require the 330L M9 tank. The newer M9 range uses different refrigerant and operating technology, so selection should be based on household demand, installation position, budget and required features rather than litres alone.

How Do STC Rebates Work?

Small-scale Technology Certificates, or STCs, are part of the Australian Government’s renewable energy scheme. Eligible heat pump and solar hot water systems can generate STCs, which carry a monetary value. JR Gas & Water applies this value as an upfront rebate so customers see a reduced out-of-pocket price on eligible products rather than needing to claim anything later themselves.

For clarity, JR Gas & Water uses a flat-rate STC rebate of $1,000 including GST on eligible systems. This means the price shown online is the customer’s out-of-pocket price after the rebate has already been applied. It is not the full gross system price before the rebate.

As an example, if a system is advertised online at $4,000, the gross system price is $5,000, less the $1,000 STC rebate, leaving the advertised out-of-pocket amount of $4,000.

This upfront rebate is offered on the basis that the installation will be completed compliantly, the system will remain eligible for STCs, and JR Gas & Water will be able to create, process, and receive the value of those certificates after installation. We handle the STC paperwork and process behind the scenes, but the rebate is conditional and relies on the job proceeding correctly from start to finish.

Who Is Eligible?

In general, customers may be eligible for the STC rebate where they are purchasing an approved solar hot water system, heat pump hot water system, or other eligible product that qualifies under the applicable scheme rules at the time of installation.

Eligibility generally requires that:
the product itself is STC eligible,
the installation address is eligible,
the system is installed in Australia,
the installation is completed in a compliant manner,
the system is capable of being properly verified,
and the customer provides any required information, declarations, signatures, and supporting documents needed to process the STCs.

Where JR Gas & Water advertises an eligible system with the rebate already applied, the customer is agreeing that the STCs will be assigned to JR Gas & Water or its nominated agent as part of the sale. That assignment is what allows the rebate to be applied upfront instead of the customer paying full price.

When Is the Rebate Not Available or Not Valid?

The STC rebate is not an automatic discount in every situation. It is only available where the installation proceeds fully and remains eligible for STC creation and assignment.

A customer may not be eligible, or may be required to repay the rebate amount, where:

the order is cancelled after rebate pricing has been applied,
the customer declines installation,
the site is not ready,
access is refused,
the installation cannot proceed due to hazards, animals, obstructions, or unsafe conditions,
the customer wants to keep the STCs personally,
required paperwork is not signed or returned,
incorrect or incomplete information is provided,
the property or system turns out not to qualify,
the quoted eligible product is changed,
a third party interferes with, alters, completes, disconnects, reconnects, or modifies the installation,
required compliance or upgrade works are refused,
or the installation cannot be lawfully completed in a way that allows the STCs to be validly claimed.

This also includes situations where another contractor performs part of the work in a way that affects eligibility, or where changes made by the customer or another trade prevent JR Gas & Water from receiving the STC benefit that the upfront rebate was based on.

What Happens If the Customer Does Not Proceed?

Where a customer accepts pricing that already includes the STC rebate and then cancels, postpones, declines installation, refuses access, or otherwise prevents the installation from being completed, JR Gas & Water may recover the full $1,000 STC rebate amount in addition to any other applicable cancellation, postponement, restocking, freight, attendance, or administrative charges.

This is because the lower advertised price was offered on the basis that JR Gas & Water would receive the benefit of the STCs after compliant completion of the installation. If the job does not proceed, that STC benefit cannot be recovered by JR Gas & Water, so the rebate amount becomes payable.

Can the Customer Keep the STCs Instead?

Yes, but not at the rebate-adjusted price.

If the customer wishes to keep, trade, or claim the STCs themselves, they must notify JR Gas & Water in writing before the order is accepted, or at the latest before installation begins. In that case, the customer must pay the full $1,000 including GST rebate amount before installation unless otherwise agreed in writing.

Heat pump hot water systems are one of the most energy-efficient ways to heat water, using ambient air to produce hot water while consuming significantly less electricity than a conventional electric storage system.

Like any appliance with refrigeration and mechanical components, regular maintenance is essential to maximise efficiency, maintain reliable performance and support your manufacturer's warranty.

Many manufacturers recommend routine inspections and servicing throughout the life of the system.

Homeowner Maintenance – Every 6 Months

Every six months we recommend carrying out a simple visual inspection of your heat pump system.

Homeowners should:

  • Carefully operate the Pressure & Temperature Relief (PTR) Valve.
  • Operate the Expansion Control Valve (ECV) (where fitted).
  • Remove leaves, grass and debris from around the outdoor unit.
  • Ensure the air inlet and outlet remain clear.
  • Check the condensate drain is free-flowing.
  • Inspect for obvious water leaks or corrosion.
  • Listen for any unusual noises during operation.

Why is this important?

Heat pumps rely on unrestricted airflow to operate efficiently.

Blocked airflow, dirty coils or seized safety valves can reduce efficiency, increase electricity consumption and place unnecessary strain on the compressor.

Operating the PTR and ECV valves every six months also helps prevent mineral build-up and confirms they continue to function correctly.

Important: Always follow your manufacturer's instructions when operating safety valves, as hot water will discharge during testing. If you're unsure, contact a licensed plumber.

  • Cleaning of the evaporator coil (where required).
  • Inspection of fan and compressor operation.
  • Inspection of condensate drainage.
  • Leak and corrosion inspection.
  • Operational performance testing.

Why These Components Matter

Sacrificial Anode

Most vitreous enamel-lined heat pump storage tanks contain a sacrificial anode.

The anode corrodes instead of the steel tank, protecting it from internal rust.

Replacing the anode at the recommended interval can significantly extend the life of your storage tank.

Pressure & Temperature Relief (PTR) Valve

The PTR valve protects the storage tank from excessive pressure and temperature.

Over time, mineral deposits may prevent the valve from operating correctly, making regular testing and replacement essential.

Expansion Control Valve (ECV)

Where fitted, the ECV controls pressure created as water expands during heating.

Maintaining the ECV helps protect both the storage tank and your home's plumbing system.

Airflow & Evaporator Coil

Unlike conventional electric systems, heat pumps rely on airflow across the evaporator coil to extract heat from the surrounding air.

Restricted airflow caused by leaves, dust or debris can:

  • Reduce efficiency.
  • Increase running costs.
  • Extend heating times.
  • Place additional strain on the compressor.

Keeping the unit clean helps maintain peak performance.

If Your Heat Pump Isn't Working

Before arranging a service, check the following:

  • Ensure power is switched on.
  • Check the circuit breaker and safety switch (RCD).
  • Confirm the isolator near the unit is turned on.
  • Check the controller for any fault or error codes.
  • Ensure the air inlet and outlet are unobstructed.
  • Remove any leaves or debris around the unit.
  • Check for visible water leaks.
  • Confirm the condensate drain is not blocked.
  • Listen for unusual noises from the fan or compressor.
  • Allow sufficient recovery time after heavy hot water usage.

If your system is still not producing hot water or is displaying fault codes, contact JR Gas & Water for professional diagnosis and repair.

General Signs Your System May Need Attention

Arrange a service if you notice:

  • Little or no hot water.
  • Unusual fan or compressor noises.
  • Error codes on the controller.
  • Constant water leaking.
  • Reduced heating performance.
  • Higher than normal electricity usage.
  • Water taking much longer to heat.
  • Visible corrosion.
  • Repeated electrical trips.
  • Restricted airflow due to dirt or debris.

Early servicing can often prevent more expensive repairs and prolong the life of your system.

Protect Your Warranty & Maximise System Life

Routine maintenance helps keep your heat pump operating safely, efficiently and reliably.

Following the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule can also assist in maintaining warranty coverage.

Failure to maintain your system may result in:

  • Reduced energy efficiency.
  • Increased electricity costs.
  • Premature tank corrosion.
  • Compressor strain.
  • Shortened system lifespan.
  • Unexpected breakdowns.
  • Possible reduction or loss of manufacturer warranty, depending on the manufacturer's maintenance requirements.

Regular preventative maintenance is one of the best ways to protect your investment and ensure your heat pump continues delivering efficient hot water for many years.

Please note: Maintenance requirements vary between manufacturers and models. Always refer to your owner's manual for the maintenance schedule applicable to your heat pump hot water system. JR Gas & Water services all major heat pump brands in accordance with manufacturer recommendations where applicable.

Estimated annual savings are calculated by comparing the heat pump’s energy efficiency (measured as COP – Coefficient of Performance) against a standard electric hot water system with a COP of 1.0. For example, if a heat pump has a COP of 4.0, it uses 75% less electricity to deliver the same amount of hot water.

Savings are based on average household usage for a family of five on Tariff 11 (general usage tariff), using manufacturer-stated COP values. The higher the COP, the greater the energy savings.

Bonus savings: When paired with a solar PV system, energy costs can drop even further — with some households seeing up to 50% additional savings, especially when the heat pump runs during solar generation times.

Disclaimer:

All estimated savings are based on manufacturer-provided COP values and standard usage assumptions (e.g. a family of five on Tariff 11). These figures are intended as a general guide to help compare different hot water units and technologies. Actual savings may vary depending on your household’s usage, energy rates, and installation conditions. We recommend conducting your own research or consulting an energy advisor to assess what’s best for your specific setup.
