JR Gas & Water provides professional basin waste replacement across Brisbane and the Gold Coast, including removal of the existing basin waste, supply and installation of a new standard chrome basin waste, reconnection to the existing waste trap and leak testing.

Suitable for bathroom, ensuite, powder-room and vanity basins where the existing basin and drainage are otherwise serviceable.

When Should a Basin Waste Be Replaced?

A basin waste may need replacement if you have:

• Water leaking beneath the basin

• Corrosion around the waste fitting

• A broken pop-up mechanism

• A waste that no longer opens or closes correctly

• Damaged seals

• Water leaking around the basin waste flange

• A cracked or damaged waste fitting

• A loose waste

• An old plug-and-waste fitting you want upgraded

• A waste that has become difficult to operate

Replacing the complete waste is often a better option than repeatedly trying to repair an old or corroded fitting.

Standard Chrome Basin Waste Supplied

The standard product includes supply of a standard chrome basin waste suitable for a normal residential bathroom basin.

The exact waste style used will depend on the basin configuration and compatibility.

Basin wastes generally need to suit whether the basin has an overflow or no overflow, so the plumber will confirm the appropriate standard fitting before installation.

Pop-Up Basin Waste Replacement

Where suitable, a standard push-button or pop-up style basin waste can be installed.

These allow the waste to be opened or closed by pressing the centre of the fitting rather than using a separate rubber plug.

The replacement must still be compatible with the existing basin and drainage arrangement.

Existing Waste Removal

The existing basin waste will be removed from the basin as part of the standard installation.

Where accessible, the plumber will:

• Disconnect the existing trap

• Remove the old basin waste

• Clean the immediate sealing surface

• Install the replacement waste

• Reconnect the existing trap

• Fill and drain the basin

• Check the completed connection for leaks

Existing Trap Reconnection

Standard installation includes reconnection to the existing serviceable basin trap.

This may be an existing:

• Bottle trap

• P-trap

• Similar accessible basin waste connection

Minor adjustment of the immediate connection is included where needed to reconnect the replacement waste.

What If My Trap Is Leaking Too?

If the existing trap is damaged, cracked, badly corroded, leaking or otherwise unsuitable for reconnection, replacement of the trap is additional work unless specifically included with the selected product.

A leaking basin does not always mean the basin waste itself is the only problem.

The plumber will identify any visible issue with the existing waste plumbing during installation.

Basin Compatibility

The standard installation assumes the existing basin is suitable for a replacement waste.

The basin must be:

• In serviceable condition

• Securely installed

• Free from significant cracks around the waste opening

• Accessible from underneath

• Compatible with a standard replacement waste

• Connected to accessible existing drainage

Some specialty, designer or unusual basins may require a specific manufacturer's waste or non-standard fitting.

Overflow vs Non-Overflow Basins

Some basins have an overflow opening near the top of the bowl, while others do not.

The replacement waste needs to suit the basin configuration.

Where a standard compatible fitting can be used, it is included within this product.

Non-standard proprietary waste assemblies may need to be separately sourced and quoted.

Vanity & Access Requirements

There must be reasonable access beneath the basin to remove and reconnect the waste.

The standard installation does not include removal of:

• Vanity cabinets

• Stone tops

• Benchtops

• Fixed drawers

• Shelving

• Wall linings

• Tiles

JR's broader plumbing terms similarly separate fixture plumbing from cabinetry, vanity and building-element removal unless specifically included.

If cabinetry prevents normal access to the waste, additional work may be required before the replacement can proceed.

Unless specifically stated or purchased separately, basin waste replacement does not include:

• Replacement of the basin

• Replacement of the vanity

• Removal of cabinetry

• Cutting cabinetry for access

• Benchtop alterations

• Stone cutting

• Tile removal

• Wall removal

• Replacement of extensively damaged drainage pipework

• Replacement of the existing trap unless separately included

• Clearing blocked drains

• Repair of cracked or damaged basins

• Specialty designer wastes

• Coloured wastes other than the included standard finish

• Proprietary manufacturer-specific waste assemblies

• Major drainage alterations

• Concealed drainage repairs

JR's standard project terms specifically exclude removal or alteration of vanities, cabinetry, benchtops and other building finishes unless expressly included.

Cracked or Damaged Basin

A new basin waste cannot reliably repair a cracked basin.

If the basin is cracked around the waste opening, overtightening or installing a replacement fitting may make the damage worse.

Where the plumber determines that the basin itself is damaged and cannot safely accept the new waste, basin replacement may be required instead.

Existing Drainage Condition

The standard service assumes the drainage immediately below the basin is serviceable.

If the existing waste pipe or trap is:

• Blocked

• Broken

• Cracked

• Corroded

• Incorrectly installed

• Inaccessible

• Unable to be reused

Testing After Installation

After fitting the new basin waste, JR Gas & Water will test the installation by:

• Filling the basin

• Checking the waste seal

• Operating the waste mechanism

• Draining the basin

• Checking the trap connection

• Inspecting the completed work for visible leaks

Is a new trap included?

No. The existing trap is reused where it is serviceable.

If the trap is damaged, leaking or unsuitable, replacement can be completed as additional plumbing work.

Can you replace a broken pop-up waste?

Yes. A faulty or broken pop-up basin waste is one of the most common reasons to replace the complete waste fitting.

My basin leaks underneath. Is the basin waste definitely the problem?

Not necessarily.

Leaks can come from the basin waste, trap, drainage connection, tapware, flexi hoses or other plumbing. If a different fault is identified, the plumber can advise what is required.

Can you replace a basin waste in a vanity?

Yes, provided there is reasonable access beneath the basin.

Do you remove drawers or cabinetry?

Normal removable items can be moved where practical, but cutting, dismantling or modifying fixed cabinetry is not included.

What if my basin is cracked?

A cracked basin may need replacement rather than simply installing a new waste.

Can you install a coloured waste?

This standard product is based on a standard replacement finish. Black, brushed nickel, gunmetal, brass or manufacturer-specific wastes may need to be separately supplied and priced.

Do you test it before leaving?

Yes. The basin is filled and drained and the completed waste and accessible connection are checked for leaks.
