Select Your Preferred Install

Choose an exact installation date, or stay flexible and save.

A 3HR Ready hot water setup is designed to help your electric storage hot water system heat during the 3 hour free power window, then store that hot water for use later in the day.

Instead of relying on a basic timer, this system uses Catch Power integration to control and monitor when the hot water system heats. The setup is designed around fast daytime recovery, solar support where suitable, and better visibility over hot water energy use.

How the system heats your hot water

During the free power window, the Catch Power relay allows the hot water system to run during the preferred heating period. On a dual element system, this helps the tank reheat faster within the available 3 hour window, so the stored hot water can be used later for showers, bathrooms, kitchens and laundry.

The tank does not need to heat at the exact time you use the hot water. It stores heated water, which makes electric storage hot water one of the most practical appliances to connect to a free daytime power strategy.

How power is fed into the hot water system

A 3HR Ready installation uses a controlled electrical setup designed to feed power to the hot water system at the right time.

The package includes Catch Power integration, dual-circuit control, manual bypass and a dual inlet isolator as part of the setup. This allows the system to prioritise heating during the 3 hour free power period while still giving the home a backup pathway when additional heating is required.

Where solar is available and suitable, the system can also be set up to support supplementary solar heating outside the free window when demand is high or extra recovery is needed.

What is Catch Power?

Catch Power is the smart control and monitoring part of the setup. It helps manage the hot water load, supports solar integration where suitable, and gives better visibility over how the system is operating.

Catch Power can provide insights into:

Hot water load

Power demand

Energy consumption

When the system is heating

How the system responds to demand

How much the hot water system is using

This gives the customer much better visibility than a basic timer, which simply turns power on and off without showing what the hot water system is actually doing.

Why a standard timer is not the best option

A standard timer may seem like a simple way to run hot water during the free power window, but it can be a costly mistake if it loses time, drifts, is set incorrectly or no longer matches the actual free power period.

If a timer is wrong, the hot water system may start heating outside the free period. The customer may think they are getting free hot water, but the system could be using paid electricity without them knowing.

A basic timer also does not provide proper insight into power consumption, load, demand or system behaviour. It does not give the same remote monitoring or solar integration benefits as a Catch Power controlled setup.

Why Catch Power is the smarter way

Catch Power is a smarter option because it gives control and visibility. It is not just switching the hot water system on and off. It helps monitor the load, manage demand, support solar integration and give the customer better insight into how their hot water system is using power.

For a 3 hour free power setup, that matters. The goal is to heat as much usable hot water as practical during the free window, store it for later, and reduce unnecessary heating outside the preferred period.

Manual bypass and backup control

Everyday hot water use is not always predictable. Some days the household may use more hot water than normal, have guests, run extra laundry or need additional recovery outside the usual heating window.

That is why the setup includes a manual bypass. This gives the home a practical backup option when extra heating is required, so the system is not locked into one rigid schedule.

Solar integration benefits

For homes with solar, the system can be set up to help use more daytime solar energy for hot water. Instead of exporting excess solar for a lower return, the system can help turn available solar power into stored hot water.

This can be especially useful when hot water demand is high or when the tank needs extra recovery outside the 3 hour free power period.

Important note

3 hour free power hot water results depend on your electricity plan, smart meter eligibility, household hot water use, tank size, solar setup, electrical configuration and whether the system needs extra heating outside the free window.

A 3HR Ready setup is designed to help make the most of the opportunity, but final performance depends on the home, usage and power plan.

PRODUCT SUITABILITY

Is the Rheem 400L Twin Element 3HR Ready System Right for My Home?

A Good Choice If...

You genuinely need high-capacity electric storage, have strong household hot water demand and want a twin-element system that can be controlled around suitable daytime electricity, solar PV and backup heating requirements.

Consider Another Option If...

Your household does not require 400L-class storage, available installation space is limited or your priority is reducing total electricity consumption. A 250L or 315L electric system or a suitable heat pump may make more sense.

JR Should Check First If...

Access is tight, the existing base is unsuitable for a larger cylinder, the property has only one hot water circuit, the switchboard needs work, the system is being relocated or the property is changing from another hot water technology.

How Many People Does the Rheem 400L Twin Element Suit?

Rheem's current product information lists the 400L electric range for large households, with manufacturer guidance extending to approximately 8–9 people depending on the stated shower, climate and tariff assumptions.

Occupant count should not be used on its own. Long showers, multiple bathrooms, bath use, simultaneous demand, teenagers, guests and unusually heavy evening demand can all increase the amount of stored hot water a home needs.

Capacity becomes particularly important when the aim is to perform most normal heating during a defined daytime period. A 400L system offers a larger stored buffer than the 250L and 315L alternatives, which may reduce the need for additional recovery outside the preferred window in genuinely high-use homes.

How Does the Rheem 400L Twin Element 3HR Ready System Work?

Input: Electricity is supplied to the heating elements inside the enamel-lined electric storage cylinder.

Operation: The elements heat the stored water. The twin-element 492400 incorporates a 90L boost section, while JR's Catch Power and dual-circuit setup manages the preferred heating and additional recovery pathways.

Result: The home stores a large volume of heated water for later showers, bathrooms, kitchens and laundry use.

Because the Rheem 400L remains conventional resistance electric storage, the 3HR Ready advantage comes from combining very large storage capacity, twin-element recovery and smarter control over when the heating electricity is consumed.

INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS

What Is Required to Install the Rheem 400L Twin Element 3HR Ready System?

A 400L electric system requires more installation planning than simply checking whether the old pipe connections line up. The cylinder is physically larger and heavier than common 250L and 315L models, and the JR 3HR Ready control arrangement also requires the electrical installation to suit the intended twin-element strategy.

Suitable space for the larger 400L cylinder
Safe installation and replacement access
Stable and compliant support base
Suitable hot and cold water connections
Correct pressure-control valves
Compliant relief drainage
Suitable electrical circuit arrangement
Electrical isolation and circuit protection
Adequate switchboard capacity
Catch Power integration
Dual-circuit hot water control
Manual bypass configuration

A straightforward like-for-like 400L replacement can be considerably simpler than upgrading from a smaller tank, relocating the cylinder or converting a single-circuit installation into the complete controlled twin-element setup. Restricted access is also more important with a 120kg packaged cylinder of this size.

What's Included With Rheem 400L Twin Element 3HR Ready Installation?

3HR Ready Control Setup

JR's current 3HR Ready configuration is designed around Catch Power integration, dual-circuit hot water control, manual bypass functionality, solar integration capability and remote monitoring.

Compliance & Commissioning

The selected installation package can include plumbing and electrical connection, testing, commissioning and relevant compliance work according to the scope purchased through the live product selector.

Possible Additional Work

New electrical circuits, switchboard modifications, difficult access, additional labour for a large cylinder, pipework changes, relocation, drainage work, valve upgrades or base work may increase the scope.

Depending on the package and property, installation may also involve existing-system removal, pipe insulation, drainage improvements, new valves, support-base work and other items required to complete the selected installation safely and compliantly.

Use the live installation package selector above as the final reference for the exact inclusions attached to the package being purchased.

How Much Does Rheem 400L Twin Element 3HR Ready Installation Cost?

Current Rheem 400L supplied-and-installed pricing is shown in the live product package selector above rather than being repeated as a fixed SEO price in this description.

Rheem 400L Twin Element installation cost in Brisbane or the Gold Coast can vary according to the selected package, electrical circuits, switchboard condition, Catch Power requirements, valves, plumbing, access, drainage, relocation and removal of the existing system.

The size and weight of the 400L cylinder can also affect installation scope. A property with clear external access and a suitable existing position can be very different from a replacement involving stairs, restricted side access, relocation or an unsuitable base.

3HR FREE POWER READY

How Does the Rheem 400L Use the 3 Hour Free Power Window?

The core strategy is to heat and store as much of the household's normal hot water requirement as practical during the preferred daytime electricity period, then use that stored hot water later.

The 400L Rheem provides the largest storage platform in the standard Rheem residential electric range, giving high-use homes a substantial reserve after the preferred heating period. Catch Power provides the control layer, while the twin-element and dual-circuit arrangement provides an additional recovery pathway when required.

Where the property has suitable solar PV, the control strategy can also consider useful daytime solar production. Hot water storage can convert available daytime electricity into stored thermal energy for evening, overnight and early-morning household use.

3HR Ready does not guarantee completely free hot water. Results depend on electricity-plan rules, smart-meter eligibility, household demand, solar generation, electrical configuration and whether additional recovery is required outside the preferred period.

Why Does the 400L Size Work Well for High-Demand 3HR Ready Homes?

A limited heating window changes the way storage capacity should be considered. The system needs enough heated water available after that window to support the household through the periods when normal paid electricity may apply.

A 400L cylinder provides a larger buffer than the 250L and 315L alternatives. That can be valuable in homes with several bathrooms, larger families, back-to-back evening showers or unusually high morning demand.

Oversizing still has disadvantages. A 400L system is physically larger, heavier and may cost more to purchase and install. JR should therefore confirm that the household genuinely benefits from the additional capacity rather than choosing the largest available cylinder automatically.

Why Does the 90L Boost Section Matter?

The 400L twin-element model has a significantly larger boost section than the comparable 250L and 315L standard Rheem twin-element cylinders.

That 90L boost capacity gives the installation additional recovery flexibility on days when household hot water demand exceeds the normal planned heating strategy.

JR's dual-circuit approach allows the normal heating and additional recovery pathways to be considered as part of one controlled 3HR Ready setup rather than simply leaving the cylinder on an uncontrolled supply.

Why Is Manual Bypass Included?

Manual bypass provides a practical fallback when actual household demand does not match the planned heating period.

If the property experiences unusually high usage and requires additional recovery outside the preferred window, the bypass provides another level of control rather than leaving the household permanently locked into one operating schedule.

This can be especially useful for larger families, rental properties and homes where guest numbers or hot water use can vary significantly.

Solar Integration and Remote Monitoring

JR's 3HR Ready package is designed to consider solar PV where the property has a suitable system and electrical arrangement. A large electric storage cylinder can provide a useful destination for daytime solar energy by storing that energy as hot water for later use.

Catch Power integration also supports remote monitoring capability, giving better visibility over controlled hot water operation and helping the household understand when the system is heating.

The exact solar and monitoring configuration depends on the electrical equipment installed at the property and the selected JR package.

BRISBANE INSTALLATION

Rheem 400L Twin Element 3HR Ready Installation Brisbane

JR Gas & Water supplies and installs the Rheem 400L Twin Element 3HR Ready system throughout Brisbane for suitable large electric replacements, upgrades and new installations.

For a Rheem 400L Twin Element install in Brisbane, physical access is more important than with smaller cylinders. The unit is approximately 1840mm high, 690mm across the body and around 120kg packaged, so gates, pathways, stairs, existing bases and the final installation area all need to suit the product.

JR also services Logan, Ipswich, Redlands and Moreton Bay. Homes replacing a smaller or single-element system may require both plumbing and electrical changes before the complete 400L twin-element 3HR Ready setup can be installed.

GOLD COAST INSTALLATION

Rheem 400L Twin Element 3HR Ready Installation Gold Coast

JR Gas & Water supplies and installs the Rheem 400L Twin Element 3HR Ready system across the Gold Coast for higher-demand homes wanting large-capacity conventional electric storage with smarter daytime control.

Gold Coast properties with larger solar PV systems can be particularly relevant to the 3HR Ready approach because the substantial storage volume creates a significant daytime electrical load that can be considered alongside both solar generation and an eligible free-power period.

For a Rheem 400L supplied and installed on the Gold Coast, JR checks access, cylinder location, support base, electrical circuits, switchboard, plumbing, water pressure and Catch Power requirements before confirming the installation pathway.

Can the Rheem 400L Twin Element Replace My Existing Hot Water System?

Replacing an Existing 400L Electric System

This is usually the most straightforward pathway where the existing location, access, base, plumbing, drainage and electrical infrastructure remain suitable.

Replacing a Single-Element 400L

The physical replacement may be relatively straightforward, but the complete twin-element 3HR Ready control strategy can require additional electrical work.

Replacing a Different Brand

The Rheem can replace many comparable large electric cylinders, but dimensions, fitting locations, valves and pipework can differ between manufacturers.

Upgrading From 250L or 315L

The larger 400L cylinder needs more physical space and access. The upgrade should be based on genuine household hot water demand rather than simply choosing a larger tank.

Changing From Gas

Gas-to-electric conversion requires a suitable electrical supply and may involve significant plumbing and electrical changes compared with a conventional electric replacement.

Relocating the System

Relocation is possible where suitable, but the size and weight of the 400L cylinder make access, base construction, pipework, drainage and electrical routing particularly important.

Which Rheem 400L Electric Variant Do I Need?

491400 Single Element

The Rheem 491400 uses the same 400L-class platform in a single-element configuration. It may suit conventional replacements where twin-element recovery and the complete 3HR Ready configuration are not required.

492400 Twin Element

This is the model covered on this page. It adds the large 90L boost section and provides the twin-element platform used for JR's controlled 3HR Ready installation.

315L Electric Alternative

A 315L cylinder may make more sense where the household still needs substantial electric storage but does not require the physical size, capacity or installation scope of the 400L model.

How Efficient Is the Rheem 400L Twin Element?

The Rheem 492400 is a conventional electric resistance storage water heater. Its 3HR Ready advantage does not come from changing the heating technology; it comes from combining a very large stored-water volume with better control over when resistance heating occurs.

JR's control strategy is designed to move more suitable heating toward useful daytime electricity, solar PV or an eligible free-power period where the property's electrical configuration allows it.

Homes focused primarily on reducing total electricity consumption should also compare a suitably sized heat pump. Homes wanting quiet operation, very large stored-water capacity and the familiar format of electric storage may prefer the Rheem 400L twin-element approach.

How Does the Rheem 400L Twin Element Compare With Other Hot Water Options?

Option Main Difference Capacity Best Use Case Important Consideration
Rheem 400L Twin Element 3HR Ready Maximum-capacity standard Rheem twin-element electric storage with JR smart-control integration 400L hot water delivery / 90L boost Large, higher-demand households wanting substantial electric storage Physical access, installation space and electrical setup are critical
Rheem 400L Single Element Same large-capacity platform without the separate twin-element boost configuration 400L hot water delivery Conventional high-capacity electric replacement Less recovery flexibility than the 492400
Rheem 315L Twin Element Smaller cylinder with lower physical size and a smaller boost section 315L hot water delivery / 50L boost Larger households that do not genuinely need 400L-class storage Lower stored-water buffer than the 400L
Heat Pump Hot Water Uses electricity to transfer ambient heat rather than relying primarily on direct resistance elements Varies by system Homes prioritising lower total electricity consumption Airflow, drainage, location, noise and recovery characteristics differ
