    What is an STC?

STC stands for Small-scale Technology Certificate. It is part of an Australian Government scheme designed to encourage energy-efficient hot water systems and other eligible renewable technologies.

    How does it work?

When your new system qualifies, STCs are created based on the expected energy savings and location of the installation. These certificates have a value, and that value is applied as an upfront discount to help reduce the installed cost.

How is it shown on our jobs?

For eligible systems, the STC value is already included as a flat rate $1000 upfront discount in the total installed price shown, so you do not need to claim it separately after installation.

    Who is eligible?

Eligibility generally applies to installations of approved systems at Australian homes and businesses where the product, property type, and installation details meet current STC program requirements.

If you are unsure whether your property or system qualifies, contact us before ordering and we can help confirm it.

POWERBAY HEAT PUMP HOT WATER INSTALLATION

Powerbay Gen II 200L Heat Pump Installation Brisbane & Gold Coast

JR Gas & Water supplies and installs the Powerbay Gen II 200L Heat Pump across eligible Brisbane, Gold Coast and surrounding South East Queensland service areas for homes wanting a compact, energy-efficient alternative to conventional electric storage hot water.

The PowerBay PBG2-200RE-HYBRID is a 200 litre all-in-one air-source heat pump water heater using R290 refrigerant, an enamel-coated steel storage tank, Wi-Fi control and an electric auxiliary heating element. PowerBay publishes a COP of up to 4.0, rated heat-pump input of 560W and a maximum outlet water temperature of 70°C.

The right heat pump installation depends on more than the tank size. JR considers the home's actual hot water demand, available installation position, airflow, condensate drainage, water pressure, plumbing arrangement, electrical supply, noise-sensitive areas and future service access before treating the system as a suitable replacement.

Powerbay Gen II 200L at a glance: a compact 200L R290 heat pump hot water system with Wi-Fi control, an enamel-coated steel tank, 560W rated heat-pump input, 2650W rated heating capacity, 1600W electric auxiliary element, up to 4.0 published COP and a published noise level of 46 dB(A) at 1 metre. JR Gas & Water can supply and install the model across eligible Brisbane and Gold Coast areas.

Who Is the Powerbay Gen II 200L Best For?

Homes With Lower Stored-Water Demand

The 200L model is worth considering where the household does not need the additional 100 litres of storage provided by the larger Gen II 300L model.

Electric Storage Replacements

It can provide a practical upgrade from an older electric storage tank where the property has a suitable heat-pump location, electrical supply, drainage and plumbing arrangement.

Homes Wanting Smart Heat Pump Control

Wi-Fi and app functionality suit customers who want remote monitoring, scheduling and access to system status information rather than a basic storage heater with no smart control.

PRODUCT SUITABILITY

Is the Powerbay Gen II 200L Right for My Home?

A Good Choice If...

You want a more compact Gen II heat pump, have a suitable outdoor installation position and your household demand does not justify stepping up to the 300L model.

Consider Another Option If...

Your household regularly has high simultaneous hot water demand, you need greater stored-water reserve, the installation area cannot provide appropriate airflow or condensate drainage, or a different hot water technology better suits the property.

JR Should Check First If...

You are changing from gas or solar, the existing electrical setup is uncertain, mains pressure is high, access is restricted, the proposed location is close to bedrooms or neighbouring windows, or relocation is required.

How Many People Does the Powerbay Gen II 200L Suit?

PowerBay's current public product information confirms the 200 litre storage capacity but does not publish a verified maximum occupant number for this exact model. JR therefore does not assign a made-up household number simply from the tank capacity.

The better sizing approach is to consider actual hot water demand. Shower length, shower flow rate, baths, multiple bathrooms, simultaneous use, washing habits, morning and evening peak periods, recovery time and the system's operating schedule can all change whether 200L is enough.

When 200L Can Make Sense

The 200L model is worth considering where hot water demand is relatively controlled and there is no practical benefit in carrying the extra tank volume, height and weight of a larger model.

When 300L May Be Better

A higher-demand home, repeated shower use or stronger morning and evening peak demand may benefit from the additional stored-water reserve of the Powerbay Gen II 300L.

JR sizing approach: tank litres are only one part of heat-pump sizing. The right model should be matched to how the property actually uses hot water rather than choosing purely from an occupant-number shortcut.

How Does the Powerbay Gen II 200L Heat Pump Work?

The integrated heat pump draws thermal energy from the surrounding air and transfers that heat into the stored water through the refrigeration circuit and tank heat exchanger. This allows the heat-pump cycle to heat water using substantially less direct electrical input than a conventional resistance-only storage element under suitable operating conditions.

The 200L Gen II also incorporates a 1600W electric heating element. Depending on operating mode and conditions, this provides auxiliary heating support in addition to the refrigeration circuit.

In simple terms: surrounding air → refrigeration cycle → heat transferred into the 200L storage tank → stored hot water supplied to the home. The electric element provides additional heating capability when the control system or operating mode calls for it.

Key Features of the Powerbay Gen II 200L

200L Enamel-Coated Storage Tank

A 200 litre enamel-coated steel tank provides stored hot water in a smaller package than the 300L Gen II system.

R290 Refrigerant

The integrated air-source heat pump uses R290 refrigerant as part of the Gen II refrigeration circuit.

Wi-Fi & App Control

PowerBay provides app-based control for remote monitoring, scheduling and checking current operating status.

1600W Auxiliary Element

The 200L model uses a smaller 1600W electric heating element compared with the 2100W element specified for the larger Gen II 300L.

Weekly Sterilisation Function

PowerBay specifies an automatic weekly sterilisation cycle as part of the Gen II system's control functionality.

Compact Gen II Footprint

The unit has a published 650mm diameter and 1870mm height, making it shorter than the corresponding 300L Gen II model.

BRISBANE INSTALLATION

Powerbay Gen II 200L Heat Pump Installation Brisbane

JR Gas & Water supplies and installs the Powerbay Gen II 200L heat pump in Brisbane for suitable replacement and upgrade jobs. A common pathway is replacing an older electric storage water heater where water and electrical services are already nearby but the new system still needs the correct heat-pump airflow, condensate drainage and maintenance access.

The existing hot water location should still be assessed rather than automatically reused. The Powerbay includes a compressor and fan in the top heat-pump section, so nearby walls, fencing, narrow side access, eaves and bedroom windows can all affect whether the existing position is suitable.

JR services eligible Brisbane installations together with surrounding Logan, Ipswich, Redlands and Moreton Bay areas, subject to the current installation package, access and booking availability.

GOLD COAST INSTALLATION

Powerbay Gen II 200L Heat Pump Installation Gold Coast

JR Gas & Water also provides Powerbay Gen II 200L heat pump installation on the Gold Coast for eligible properties wanting to replace conventional electric storage or another suitable hot water system with a compact heat-pump setup.

For Gold Coast homes, location remains important because a heat pump is an outdoor mechanical appliance rather than a silent storage cylinder. Airflow, condensate drainage, exposure, service access and proximity to bedrooms or neighbouring windows should all form part of the installation decision.

Where the Powerbay is replacing gas, solar hot water or another heat pump, JR can assess which existing services can be reused and which parts of the plumbing, drainage or electrical setup need to change before installation proceeds.

Can the Powerbay Gen II 200L Replace My Existing Hot Water System?

Replacing Electric Storage

This is often the simplest upgrade pathway where the existing position provides suitable airflow, drainage, power and plumbing connections for the heat pump.

Replacing Another Heat Pump

An older or failed heat pump can potentially be replaced with the Powerbay, but electrical demand, dimensions, condensate arrangement, connection positions and clearance requirements should be checked first.

Replacing Gas Hot Water

Changing from gas to heat pump is a technology conversion rather than a direct replacement. New electrical provision, altered plumbing and appropriate treatment of the old gas installation may be required.

Replacing Solar Hot Water

Solar hot water can also be converted to a heat pump, but the existing tank, solar pipework, roof components, booster connection and removal requirements need to be assessed as part of the scope.

Powerbay Gen II 200L vs 300L

The 200L and 300L Powerbay Gen II systems use the same general heat-pump platform, but there are meaningful differences in storage capacity, overall size, auxiliary element rating, electrical demand and weight.

Specification Powerbay Gen II 200L Powerbay Gen II 300L
Storage Capacity 200L 300L
Refrigerant R290 R290
Published COP Up to 4.0 Up to 4.0
Heat Pump Input 560W 560W
Rated Heating Capacity 2650W 2350W
Electric Element 1600W 2100W
Maximum Current 12.5A 15A
Published Noise 46 dB(A) at 1m 46 dB(A) at 1m
Diameter 650mm 650mm
Height 1870mm 2030mm
Net Weight 100kg 114kg
Main Difference Smaller storage volume, lower auxiliary element rating and shorter overall unit. Additional 100L stored-water reserve for stronger household demand.

The 300L is not automatically better simply because it stores more water. The better choice is the model that matches the property's genuine hot water demand, recovery requirements, electrical setup and available installation space.

How Much Electricity Does the Powerbay Gen II 200L Use?

PowerBay publishes a 560W rated electrical input during heat-pump operation and 2650W rated heating capacity, with a COP of up to 4.0. The electric auxiliary heating element is rated at 1600W and the published maximum current figure for the 200L model is 12.5A.

The manufacturer promotes energy savings of up to 75% compared with conventional water heating. This is a maximum marketing figure rather than a guaranteed household saving. Actual consumption depends on ambient conditions, water use, operating mode, target temperature, auxiliary-element use, installation quality and the times of day the unit is scheduled to run.

Efficiency takeaway: the main efficiency benefit comes from allowing the heat-pump refrigeration cycle to perform most of the heating work. Heavy demand or frequent auxiliary-element operation can reduce the real-world efficiency advantage.

Powerbay Gen II 200L Maintenance

Keep Airflow Clear

Do not allow vegetation, stored items or other obstructions to block the heat-pump air intake and discharge areas.

Maintain Drainage

The condensate drain and hot-water safety drainage need to remain clear so water can discharge correctly during normal operation.

Maintain the Storage System

The enamel-lined storage cylinder, protective components, valves and electrical components should be inspected and maintained in accordance with current PowerBay requirements.

How Do STC Rebates Work?

Small-scale Technology Certificates, or STCs, are part of the Australian Government’s renewable energy scheme. Eligible heat pump and solar hot water systems can generate STCs, which carry a monetary value. JR Gas & Water applies this value as an upfront rebate so customers see a reduced out-of-pocket price on eligible products rather than needing to claim anything later themselves.

For clarity, JR Gas & Water uses a flat-rate STC rebate of $1,000 including GST on eligible systems. This means the price shown online is the customer’s out-of-pocket price after the rebate has already been applied. It is not the full gross system price before the rebate.

As an example, if a system is advertised online at $4,000, the gross system price is $5,000, less the $1,000 STC rebate, leaving the advertised out-of-pocket amount of $4,000.

This upfront rebate is offered on the basis that the installation will be completed compliantly, the system will remain eligible for STCs, and JR Gas & Water will be able to create, process, and receive the value of those certificates after installation. We handle the STC paperwork and process behind the scenes, but the rebate is conditional and relies on the job proceeding correctly from start to finish.

Who Is Eligible?

In general, customers may be eligible for the STC rebate where they are purchasing an approved solar hot water system, heat pump hot water system, or other eligible product that qualifies under the applicable scheme rules at the time of installation.

Eligibility generally requires that:
the product itself is STC eligible,
the installation address is eligible,
the system is installed in Australia,
the installation is completed in a compliant manner,
the system is capable of being properly verified,
and the customer provides any required information, declarations, signatures, and supporting documents needed to process the STCs.

Where JR Gas & Water advertises an eligible system with the rebate already applied, the customer is agreeing that the STCs will be assigned to JR Gas & Water or its nominated agent as part of the sale. That assignment is what allows the rebate to be applied upfront instead of the customer paying full price.

When Is the Rebate Not Available or Not Valid?

The STC rebate is not an automatic discount in every situation. It is only available where the installation proceeds fully and remains eligible for STC creation and assignment.

A customer may not be eligible, or may be required to repay the rebate amount, where:

the order is cancelled after rebate pricing has been applied,
the customer declines installation,
the site is not ready,
access is refused,
the installation cannot proceed due to hazards, animals, obstructions, or unsafe conditions,
the customer wants to keep the STCs personally,
required paperwork is not signed or returned,
incorrect or incomplete information is provided,
the property or system turns out not to qualify,
the quoted eligible product is changed,
a third party interferes with, alters, completes, disconnects, reconnects, or modifies the installation,
required compliance or upgrade works are refused,
or the installation cannot be lawfully completed in a way that allows the STCs to be validly claimed.

This also includes situations where another contractor performs part of the work in a way that affects eligibility, or where changes made by the customer or another trade prevent JR Gas & Water from receiving the STC benefit that the upfront rebate was based on.

What Happens If the Customer Does Not Proceed?

Where a customer accepts pricing that already includes the STC rebate and then cancels, postpones, declines installation, refuses access, or otherwise prevents the installation from being completed, JR Gas & Water may recover the full $1,000 STC rebate amount in addition to any other applicable cancellation, postponement, restocking, freight, attendance, or administrative charges.

This is because the lower advertised price was offered on the basis that JR Gas & Water would receive the benefit of the STCs after compliant completion of the installation. If the job does not proceed, that STC benefit cannot be recovered by JR Gas & Water, so the rebate amount becomes payable.

Can the Customer Keep the STCs Instead?

Yes, but not at the rebate-adjusted price.

If the customer wishes to keep, trade, or claim the STCs themselves, they must notify JR Gas & Water in writing before the order is accepted, or at the latest before installation begins. In that case, the customer must pay the full $1,000 including GST rebate amount before installation unless otherwise agreed in writing.

Heat pump hot water systems are one of the most energy-efficient ways to heat water, using ambient air to produce hot water while consuming significantly less electricity than a conventional electric storage system.

Like any appliance with refrigeration and mechanical components, regular maintenance is essential to maximise efficiency, maintain reliable performance and support your manufacturer's warranty.

Many manufacturers recommend routine inspections and servicing throughout the life of the system.

Homeowner Maintenance – Every 6 Months

Every six months we recommend carrying out a simple visual inspection of your heat pump system.

Homeowners should:

  • Carefully operate the Pressure & Temperature Relief (PTR) Valve.
  • Operate the Expansion Control Valve (ECV) (where fitted).
  • Remove leaves, grass and debris from around the outdoor unit.
  • Ensure the air inlet and outlet remain clear.
  • Check the condensate drain is free-flowing.
  • Inspect for obvious water leaks or corrosion.
  • Listen for any unusual noises during operation.

Why is this important?

Heat pumps rely on unrestricted airflow to operate efficiently.

Blocked airflow, dirty coils or seized safety valves can reduce efficiency, increase electricity consumption and place unnecessary strain on the compressor.

Operating the PTR and ECV valves every six months also helps prevent mineral build-up and confirms they continue to function correctly.

Important: Always follow your manufacturer's instructions when operating safety valves, as hot water will discharge during testing. If you're unsure, contact a licensed plumber.

Recommended 5-Year Major Service

Current Price: $449

Like any major appliance, heat pump hot water systems benefit from scheduled component replacement and servicing.

Our comprehensive 5-Year Service includes:

  • Replacement of the sacrificial anode (where fitted).
  • Replacement of the Pressure & Temperature Relief (PTR) Valve.
  • Replacement of the Expansion Control Valve (ECV).
  • Full inspection of the storage tank and heat pump unit.
  • Electrical safety testing.
  • Inspection of wiring and controls.
  • Cleaning of the evaporator coil (where required).
  • Inspection of fan and compressor operation.
  • Inspection of condensate drainage.
  • Leak and corrosion inspection.
  • Operational performance testing.

Why These Components Matter

Sacrificial Anode

Most vitreous enamel-lined heat pump storage tanks contain a sacrificial anode.

The anode corrodes instead of the steel tank, protecting it from internal rust.

Replacing the anode at the recommended interval can significantly extend the life of your storage tank.

Pressure & Temperature Relief (PTR) Valve

The PTR valve protects the storage tank from excessive pressure and temperature.

Over time, mineral deposits may prevent the valve from operating correctly, making regular testing and replacement essential.

Expansion Control Valve (ECV)

Where fitted, the ECV controls pressure created as water expands during heating.

Maintaining the ECV helps protect both the storage tank and your home's plumbing system.

Airflow & Evaporator Coil

Unlike conventional electric systems, heat pumps rely on airflow across the evaporator coil to extract heat from the surrounding air.

Restricted airflow caused by leaves, dust or debris can:

  • Reduce efficiency.
  • Increase running costs.
  • Extend heating times.
  • Place additional strain on the compressor.

Keeping the unit clean helps maintain peak performance.

If Your Heat Pump Isn't Working

Before arranging a service, check the following:

  • Ensure power is switched on.
  • Check the circuit breaker and safety switch (RCD).
  • Confirm the isolator near the unit is turned on.
  • Check the controller for any fault or error codes.
  • Ensure the air inlet and outlet are unobstructed.
  • Remove any leaves or debris around the unit.
  • Check for visible water leaks.
  • Confirm the condensate drain is not blocked.
  • Listen for unusual noises from the fan or compressor.
  • Allow sufficient recovery time after heavy hot water usage.

If your system is still not producing hot water or is displaying fault codes, contact JR Gas & Water for professional diagnosis and repair.

General Signs Your System May Need Attention

Arrange a service if you notice:

  • Little or no hot water.
  • Unusual fan or compressor noises.
  • Error codes on the controller.
  • Constant water leaking.
  • Reduced heating performance.
  • Higher than normal electricity usage.
  • Water taking much longer to heat.
  • Visible corrosion.
  • Repeated electrical trips.
  • Restricted airflow due to dirt or debris.

Early servicing can often prevent more expensive repairs and prolong the life of your system.

Protect Your Warranty & Maximise System Life

Routine maintenance helps keep your heat pump operating safely, efficiently and reliably.

Following the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule can also assist in maintaining warranty coverage.

Failure to maintain your system may result in:

  • Reduced energy efficiency.
  • Increased electricity costs.
  • Premature tank corrosion.
  • Compressor strain.
  • Shortened system lifespan.
  • Unexpected breakdowns.
  • Possible reduction or loss of manufacturer warranty, depending on the manufacturer's maintenance requirements.

Regular preventative maintenance is one of the best ways to protect your investment and ensure your heat pump continues delivering efficient hot water for many years.

Estimated annual savings are calculated by comparing the heat pump’s energy efficiency (measured as COP – Coefficient of Performance) against a standard electric hot water system with a COP of 1.0. For example, if a heat pump has a COP of 4.0, it uses 75% less electricity to deliver the same amount of hot water.

Savings are based on average household usage for a family of five on Tariff 11 (general usage tariff), using manufacturer-stated COP values. The higher the COP, the greater the energy savings.

Bonus savings: When paired with a solar PV system, energy costs can drop even further — with some households seeing up to 50% additional savings, especially when the heat pump runs during solar generation times.

Disclaimer:

All estimated savings are based on manufacturer-provided COP values and standard usage assumptions (e.g. a family of five on Tariff 11). These figures are intended as a general guide to help compare different hot water units and technologies. Actual savings may vary depending on your household’s usage, energy rates, and installation conditions. We recommend conducting your own research or consulting an energy advisor to assess what’s best for your specific setup.
