SMART HOT WATER ENERGY MANAGEMENT

Powerlake Hot Water Controller Installation Brisbane & Gold Coast

JR Gas & Water installs the Powerlake Hot Water Controller for compatible electric hot water systems across eligible Brisbane, Gold Coast and surrounding South East Queensland service areas.

Powerlake is a home energy management platform designed to shift flexible electrical loads such as electric storage hot water into periods when energy is more favourable. Depending on the property, that can include available rooftop solar generation, lower-cost electricity periods and other supported energy signals.

Unlike a basic timer that follows the same fixed clock schedule every day, Powerlake can use real-time energy information to decide when a compatible controllable load should operate.

Quick answer: Powerlake monitors household energy conditions and automatically controls compatible electrical loads such as electric storage hot water. It can use solar production and favourable electricity conditions to decide when the heater should run, while stored hot water allows that energy to be used later when showers, baths and taps are actually needed.

CURRENT JR PURCHASE OPTIONS

Check the Live Selector Before Ordering

JR's older description states that Powerlake is available only as an add-on to Sapphire, Diamond or Platinum installations. JR's current live selector now displays additional purchase pathways.

Sapphire, Diamond or Platinum

The current selector includes an add-on pathway for eligible premium hot water package purchases.

Base, Silver or Gold

JR currently displays a separate add-on option for eligible Base, Silver or Gold hot water packages, including additional electrical items specified by that selection.

Stand-Alone Installation

JR's current selector also displays a stand-alone installation pathway where no hot water system is being purchased with the same order.

The live selector above should control current eligibility and inclusions. Package structures can change, so the older “premium add-on only” wording should not override the currently available product options.

WHAT POWERLAKE IS

A Home Energy Management System for Flexible Loads

Powerlake describes its service as a home energy management system that automatically manages flexible household energy loads according to signals of energy abundance.

Hot Water

Compatible electric storage hot water can be controlled because the heating load can be shifted while the heated water remains stored for later use.

Solar Energy

Powerlake can monitor solar generation and household energy flow so flexible loads can make greater use of electricity generated onsite.

Other Flexible Loads

Powerlake also supports broader energy-management applications such as pool equipment, EV charging and other compatible loads.

The controller does not make the hot water system itself more thermally efficient. Its main job is to improve when flexible electrical demand occurs and what source or tariff is supplying that energy.

HOW IT WORKS

How Does Powerlake Control Hot Water?

1. Monitor Energy Flow

Compatible monitoring hardware measures energy at relevant points such as the grid supply and solar generation.

2. Analyse Available Energy

Powerlake's service uses energy data, tariff conditions and configured household requirements to determine suitable operating periods.

3. Control the Hot Water Load

A compatible smart relay or switching arrangement turns the controlled hot water circuit on and off as required.

4. Store Heat for Later

The electric cylinder stores the heated water so energy collected during a favourable period can be used later.

Powerlake is load control rather than water-temperature control. The hot water system's thermostat and safety controls continue to manage the normal tank temperature.

SOLAR SELF-CONSUMPTION

Using More Rooftop Solar for Hot Water

A common solar-home problem is exporting electricity during the middle of the day and then buying electricity back from the grid at another time to heat water.

Powerlake is designed to help shift suitable flexible demand toward periods when onsite generation is available.

Monitor Solar Production

The system can monitor relevant solar and site-energy data rather than relying only on a fixed daytime schedule.

Control the Heating Load

Compatible electric hot water can be switched according to Powerlake's energy-management strategy.

Use the Tank as Storage

The water cylinder effectively stores energy as heat, allowing daytime electricity to provide hot water later in the day.

Powerlake is not the same as a proportional hot water diverter. Its compatible relay/control hardware switches loads according to the energy-management strategy. The exact load behaviour depends on the installed hardware and controlled circuit.

SMARTER THAN A FIXED TIMER

Powerlake vs a Basic Hot Water Timer

Basic Timer

Runs the hot water circuit during predetermined clock periods regardless of actual solar output or changing energy conditions.

Powerlake

Uses energy monitoring and automated control to move compatible loads around solar production, tariffs and household requirements.

When a Timer Is Enough

A simple timer can still be appropriate where the objective is only to heat during the same predictable period every day.

Choose the control to suit the objective. Powerlake provides more value where energy conditions change and the customer wants automatic optimisation rather than manually choosing one permanent schedule.

ELECTRICITY TARIFFS

Can Powerlake Use Cheaper Electricity Periods?

Yes. Powerlake states that its service can manage flexible loads according to low electricity prices and other favourable energy conditions.

This makes stored hot water useful because heating can occur when electricity is favourable while the household consumes the stored hot water later.

Solar First

Where appropriate, onsite solar generation can form part of the control strategy.

Lower-Cost Grid Periods

Flexible demand can also be positioned around favourable grid-energy conditions where the household's plan and setup support it.

Changing Conditions

Unlike a basic timer, automated energy management can respond to changing conditions instead of assuming the same time is always best.

The controller cannot create a cheaper electricity tariff. Actual savings depend on the customer's electricity plan, solar generation, hot water demand and the energy prices available to the property.

COMPATIBILITY

What Hot Water Systems Work With Powerlake?

Powerlake's current compatibility guidance distinguishes between directly compatible resistive storage systems and appliances requiring more careful assessment.

Electric Resistive Storage

Powerlake lists electric resistive storage hot water systems as directly compatible flexible loads where the electrical installation is suitable.

Heat Pump Hot Water

Heat pumps are conditionally compatible where the exact model supports suitable external control. Manufacturer requirements need to be checked before switching power externally.

Smart Appliances

Any appliance that relies on continuous supply, internal hygiene cycles, frost protection or electronic control should be assessed before it is treated as a switchable load.

Do not assume every electric hot water appliance can be switched on and off externally. Heat-pump and smart-system compatibility depends on the exact model and manufacturer control requirements.

SOLAR & BATTERY COMPATIBILITY

Does Powerlake Work With Solar and Batteries?

Powerlake is designed for grid-connected homes with solar and can also operate in many installations with battery storage.

Solar Without Battery

Flexible loads can be shifted toward onsite solar production to improve direct self-consumption.

AC-Coupled Battery

Powerlake lists AC-coupled solar and battery inverter installations among its direct compatibility pathways.

DC-Coupled Systems

Powerlake currently identifies DC-coupled solar-and-battery arrangements as a more complex compatibility case because solar-generation monitoring is not standardised in the same way.

Battery compatibility is installation specific. Where the property has a DC-coupled battery or unusual metering arrangement, Powerlake recommends checking the exact configuration rather than assuming direct compatibility.

HARDWARE

What Hardware Does Powerlake Use?

Powerlake is primarily a software and energy-management service. Its current terms state that compatible third-party hardware is required to monitor energy and control connected loads.

Energy Monitoring

Compatible monitoring hardware measures energy flow at the grid and, where required, solar generation points.

Smart Relays

Compatible smart relays or contactor arrangements provide control of the hot water circuit.

Shelly Hardware

Powerlake's current compatibility documentation includes multiple Shelly monitoring and relay products among the supported hardware options.

JR's current Power Lake product page lists two Shelly controllers within its installation offering. The exact current devices and switching arrangement should follow the live JR package and the approved installation design rather than assuming one fixed hardware model for every property.

SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE

Does Powerlake Require a Subscription?

Yes. Powerlake's current service is subscription based. The subscription provides access to the optimisation platform and its associated monitoring, automation, analysis and support features.

Automated Optimisation

The platform manages compatible flexible loads according to available solar, electricity conditions and household requirements.

Energy Insights

Powerlake provides energy-use information and tools intended to help customers understand how the property is consuming electricity.

Remote Control

Customers retain control of connected devices and can adjust or override settings through Powerlake's current management platform.

Subscription pricing can change. Check Powerlake's current service terms and pricing when the controller is installed rather than relying on a fixed subscription figure embedded in this product description.

ENERGY SAVINGS

Can Powerlake Reduce Hot Water Energy Costs?

Potentially, yes. Powerlake's purpose is to reduce the cost of flexible energy loads by increasing the use of onsite solar and favourable grid-energy periods.

Use More Solar Directly

Moving hot water demand into periods of solar production can reduce the amount of low-value energy exported before electricity is later purchased back from the grid.

Optimise Energy Timing

Powerlake can adjust flexible energy use according to changing conditions instead of following only one permanent schedule.

Results Depend on the Property

Solar size, feed-in tariff, retail tariff, tank capacity, element power, household demand and other controlled loads all affect the financial outcome.

JR's “up to 81%” figure should not be treated as a guaranteed saving. JR currently advertises potential savings of up to 81%, but the accessible JR product page does not publish the calculation assumptions or a universal test methodology showing that every property will achieve that result.

Powerlake publishes real customer examples rather than one universal percentage. Those examples demonstrate that savings can occur, but they are specific to each home's solar production, tariffs and controllable loads.

MULTIPLE LOADS

Can Powerlake Control More Than Hot Water?

Yes. Powerlake is designed as a broader household energy-management platform rather than a single-purpose hot water timer.

Hot Water

Electric storage hot water can provide a large flexible load because energy can be stored as heated water.

Pool Equipment

Compatible pool pumps and chlorinators can also be scheduled around available solar or favourable energy periods.

EV & Other Loads

Powerlake supports broader flexible-load strategies including compatible EV charging and other controllable circuits.

Multiple loads can work together. Powerlake states that its platform can coordinate multiple controllable devices behind the same meter point rather than optimising each device in isolation.

INSTALLATION

What's Involved in Installing Powerlake?

Powerlake requires both suitable electrical hardware and correct software configuration. The installed system needs to measure the relevant energy flows and control the intended hot water circuit safely.

1. Assess the Electrical Setup

The electrician checks the switchboard, solar arrangement, controlled load, hot water system and available network connection.

2. Install Monitoring Hardware

Compatible energy-monitoring equipment is fitted to measure the electricity information required by the control strategy.

BRISBANE

Powerlake Hot Water Controller Installation Brisbane

JR Gas & Water installs compatible Powerlake hot water control solutions across eligible Greater Brisbane service areas.

For Brisbane solar homes, Powerlake can be particularly relevant where substantial daytime solar is currently exported while an electric hot water tank heats at another time using grid electricity.

The value of the upgrade depends on the home's actual energy profile rather than simply whether solar panels are installed. Solar generation, export, hot water demand, tariff structure and the existing controlled-load arrangement should all be considered.

GOLD COAST

Powerlake Hot Water Controller Installation Gold Coast

JR Gas & Water also installs compatible Powerlake energy-management systems across eligible Gold Coast service areas.

For Gold Coast homes with rooftop PV, stored electric hot water can provide a substantial flexible load that can be moved toward daytime solar production where the electrical system and household usage suit that strategy.

Homes with batteries, unusual inverter arrangements or heat-pump hot water should have compatibility assessed before the control configuration is selected.
