Envirosun AS400/40 Installation Brisbane & Gold Coast
JR Gas & Water supplies and installs the Envirosun AS400/40 Active Split Solar Hot Water System across Brisbane, the Gold Coast and eligible surrounding South East Queensland service areas.
The current Envirosun AS400/40 is a high-capacity active split solar hot water system with a ground-mounted storage tank and two roof-mounted E20HS flat-plate solar collectors. A small circulation pump moves heated water between the collectors and the tank under the control of Envirosun's DeltaSol® B electronic controller.
Despite the AS400 model name, Envirosun's current specification lists the system with 420 litres of storage capacity. This makes it one of the largest current AS Active Split configurations and a strong option for larger households or homes with heavier hot water demand.
Envirosun AS400/40 at a glance: 420L ground-mounted storage, two E20HS flat-plate collectors, active pumped circulation, DeltaSol® B controller, electric or gas boost options, VE400/E24/V-DM tank, 705 × 705mm tank footprint, 1,705mm tank height, 253L electric boost capacity on the AS400/40Se and current 10-year Envirosun warranty.
Envirosun AS400/40 Supply & Installation at a Glance
420L Storage
The current AS400 tank provides 420 litres of storage, despite the AS400 model designation.
Twin Solar Collectors
The AS400/40 uses two E20HS flat-plate solar collectors mounted on the roof.
Ground-Level Tank
The storage tank remains at ground level, reducing roof load and making tank servicing more accessible.
Electric or Gas Boost
Envirosun offers the AS400/40 platform in both electric-boosted and gas-boosted configurations.
What Is the Envirosun AS400/40?
The Envirosun AS400/40 is an active split solar hot water system.
In a split system, the storage tank is installed separately from the roof collectors. The collectors absorb solar energy on the roof while an electronically controlled circulation pump transfers heated water through the solar circuit to the ground-mounted tank.
This differs from a close-coupled or thermosiphon system, where both the tank and collectors are mounted together on the roof.
The split layout can provide more flexibility around roof loading, tank servicing, tank position and the overall appearance of the property.
How Does the Envirosun AS Active Split System Work?
1. Solar Collection
Two E20HS flat-plate collectors mounted on the roof absorb solar energy.
2. Active Circulation
A circulation pump transfers heated water between the collectors and the ground-mounted storage tank.
3. Smart Control
The DeltaSol® B controller compares collector and tank temperatures and controls when the circulation pump operates.
Envirosun states that the controller activates the pump when collector temperature is approximately 10°C higher than the tank temperature, helping move useful solar heat into storage only when conditions are suitable.
Why Choose the Envirosun AS400/40?
Large 420L Storage Capacity
The AS400 provides substantially more stored hot water than the smaller AS315 platform.
Tank Stays Off the Roof
Only the collectors are roof mounted, while the much heavier storage tank remains at ground level.
Twin E20HS Collectors
The AS400/40 uses two selective-surface flat-plate solar collectors designed for strong solar absorption.
Electronic Solar Control
The DeltaSol® B controller monitors tank and collector temperatures to manage pumped solar circulation.
Electric or Gas Boosting
The AS400 platform can be configured around either an electric booster or an appropriate gas boosting arrangement.
STC Eligible
Envirosun's current AS systems are accredited with the Clean Energy Regulator and eligible to generate applicable Small-scale Technology Certificates.
Is the Envirosun AS400/40 Right for Your Home?
A Strong Fit If...
You want high-capacity solar hot water but prefer the storage tank at ground level instead of mounting a large tank on the roof.
Good for Higher Demand
The 420L tank provides additional storage for larger households or properties with heavier hot water usage.
Site Assessment Matters
Collector orientation, shading, roof structure, tank location, pipe runs, booster type and access all affect whether an active split system is the right fit.

AS400/40Se Electric-Boosted Version
The AS400/40Se is the electric-boosted version of the twin-collector AS400 system.
Envirosun currently specifies a 2.4kW electric booster and approximately 253 litres of boost capacity.
The electric booster provides backup heating when solar contribution is insufficient to meet household demand.
Electrical suitability, existing circuit arrangements and any required electrical upgrades need to be assessed as part of the installation.
AS400/40Sg Gas-Boosted Version
The AS400/40Sg uses the same 420L storage and twin E20HS solar collector arrangement with gas boosting instead of the tank's electric boosting configuration.
Envirosun currently publishes a maximum gas boost rate of approximately 26 L/min, with 188 MJ/hr gas consumption and approximately 42kW heat output.
The suitability of gas boosting depends on the available gas supply, meter or LPG arrangement, gas pipe sizing, booster position and installation conditions.
Two E20HS Flat-Plate Solar Collectors
The AS400/40 uses two Envirosun E20HS collectors.
Envirosun describes these as selective-surface flat-plate collectors with laser-welded copper risers, weather-resistant aluminium trays, thermal insulation and tempered solar glass.
Each collector measures approximately 1,235 × 2,000mm and weighs approximately 27.5kg empty.
The twin-collector system requires an approximate roof footprint of 2,270 × 2,050mm, although practical roof clearance, mounting requirements and service access need to be considered separately.
DeltaSol® B Solar Controller
The Envirosun AS range uses the DeltaSol® B electronic controller.
The controller uses temperature sensors at the collectors and storage tank to determine when useful solar heat is available.
Envirosun states that the controller activates circulation when the collector is approximately 10°C hotter than the tank.
The controller also incorporates functions designed around overheating management, cooling and frost-risk reduction.
Ground-Mounted 420L Storage Tank
The AS400 uses the VE400/E24/V-DM storage tank.
The current tank is approximately 705mm × 705mm in footprint and 1,705mm high.
It weighs approximately 115kg empty and approximately 535kg when full.
This weight is one of the major reasons the split-system layout is useful: the storage mass stays at ground level while only the solar collectors are installed on the roof.
Roof Suitability for the AS400/40
Solar hot water performance depends heavily on collector positioning.
The roof needs enough suitable area for two collectors, appropriate structural support and a practical orientation with limited shading.
The collector position also affects the length and complexity of the solar flow and return pipework between the roof and ground-level tank.
Roof material, pitch, access, height and surrounding obstructions can all affect installation scope.
Indoor or Outdoor Tank Installation
Envirosun states that the AS Active Split storage tank can be positioned at ground level indoors or outdoors where installation requirements are satisfied.
The best position depends on drainage, structural support, access, existing plumbing, solar pipe routes and future servicing.
A practical tank location can significantly simplify long-term maintenance compared with having a large storage vessel mounted on the roof.

| Main Difference | Twin collector configuration | Triple collector configuration |
The AS400/40 and AS400/60 use the same 420L tank. The AS400/60 adds a third E20HS collector, increasing available collector area but also increasing the roof-space requirement.
Active Split vs Close-Coupled Solar Hot Water
Active Split
The tank remains at ground level while roof-mounted collectors transfer heat using an electronically controlled circulation pump.
Close Coupled / Thermosiphon
The storage tank and collectors are both installed on the roof, with natural thermosiphon circulation rather than an active solar circulation pump.
An active split system may be preferable where keeping the heavy storage tank off the roof, improving tank access or achieving a different visual outcome is important.
Solar Hot Water & STCs
Envirosun's current AS Active Split systems are listed with the Australian Government Clean Energy Regulator and may be eligible to generate Small-scale Technology Certificates.
STCs can reduce the effective upfront cost of an eligible solar hot water installation.
The number of certificates depends on the exact approved system combination, installation date, geographic zone and the remaining deeming period under the scheme.
Because STC values and deeming periods change over time, the current applicable value should be used when the system is sold rather than relying on an older brochure figure.

Solar hot water systems are an efficient and environmentally friendly way to heat your water, using energy from the sun to reduce electricity or gas consumption. To continue operating efficiently and reliably, they require regular maintenance and servicing.
Like any hot water system, manufacturers recommend routine maintenance to maximise system performance, protect key components and support your manufacturer's warranty.
Homeowner Maintenance – Every 6 Months
Every six months we recommend carrying out a simple visual inspection of your solar hot water system.
Homeowners should:
- Carefully operate the Pressure & Temperature Relief (PTR) Valve.
- Operate the Expansion Control Valve (ECV) (where fitted).
- Check for water leaks around the storage tank and pipework.
- Inspect visible solar pipe insulation for deterioration.
- Ensure solar collectors are free from excessive dirt, leaves and debris where safely accessible.
- Check for signs of corrosion or rust.
- Listen for unusual noises from the system or circulating pump (where fitted).
Why is this important?
Regular operation of the PTR and ECV valves helps prevent mineral build-up that can cause the valves to seize or leak.
Keeping collectors and surrounding components clean allows the solar system to operate as efficiently as possible, while early detection of leaks or damaged insulation can prevent larger problems from developing.
Important: Always follow your manufacturer's instructions when operating safety valves, as hot water will discharge during testing. Do not climb onto your roof to inspect or clean collectors. If you're unsure, contact a licensed plumber.

Most solar storage hot water systems benefit from scheduled replacement of key components to maintain reliable performance and extend the life of the storage tank.
Our comprehensive 5-Year Service includes:
- Replacement of the sacrificial anode (where fitted).
- Replacement of the Pressure & Temperature Relief (PTR) Valve.
- Replacement of the Expansion Control Valve (ECV).
- Inspection of the solar collectors.
- Inspection of solar pipework and insulation.
- Inspection of circulating pump and controller (where fitted).
- Inspection of booster operation.
- Full operational testing.
- Leak and corrosion inspection.
Why These Components Matter
Sacrificial Anode
Most vitreous enamel-lined solar storage tanks contain a sacrificial anode.
The anode gradually corrodes instead of the steel storage tank, protecting it from internal rust. Once the anode has been consumed, the tank itself begins to corrode, which can eventually lead to leaks and tank failure.
Replacing the anode at the recommended interval is one of the best ways to extend the life of your hot water system.
Pressure & Temperature Relief (PTR) Valve
The PTR valve protects the storage tank by safely relieving excessive pressure and temperature.
Mineral deposits and normal wear can prevent the valve from operating correctly over time, making routine testing and replacement essential.
Expansion Control Valve (ECV)
Where fitted, the ECV controls pressure created as water expands during heating.
Maintaining the ECV helps reduce stress on the storage tank and plumbing system, contributing to a longer service life.
Solar Collectors & Pipework
Solar collectors capture the sun's energy to heat water, while insulated pipework transfers that heat to the storage tank.
Keeping collectors unobstructed and ensuring pipe insulation remains in good condition helps:
- Maximise solar efficiency.
- Reduce reliance on electric or gas boosting.
- Lower energy costs.
- Improve overall system performance.
If Your Hot Water System Isn't Working
Before arranging a service, check the following:
- Ensure power is switched on (for electric boosted systems).
- Confirm the gas supply is on (for gas boosted systems).
- Check circuit breakers and safety switches where applicable.
- Verify the booster has not been turned off.
- Inspect for visible water leaks.
- Ensure exposed solar pipe insulation has not been damaged.
- Check for controller fault codes (where fitted).
- Listen for unusual noises from the circulating pump (where fitted).
- Remember that several cloudy days may reduce solar heating, causing the booster to operate more frequently.
If your system is still not producing adequate hot water, contact JR Gas & Water for professional diagnosis and repair.
General Signs Your System May Need Attention
Arrange a service if you notice:
- Reduced hot water availability.
- Booster operating more frequently than usual.
- Water leaking from the tank or pipework.
- Constant dripping from relief valves.
- Visible corrosion.
- Damaged or deteriorated pipe insulation.
- Pump noise or failure (where fitted).
- Controller fault codes.
- Rust-coloured or dirty water.
- Unusual noises during operation.
Early servicing can often prevent more expensive repairs and extend the life of your solar hot water system.
Protect Your Warranty & Maximise System Life
Routine maintenance helps ensure your solar hot water system continues operating safely, efficiently and reliably.
Following the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule may also assist in maintaining warranty coverage.
Failure to maintain your system may result in:
- Premature tank corrosion.
- Reduced solar efficiency.
- Higher electricity or gas consumption.
- Leaking or seized safety valves.
- Unexpected loss of hot water.
- Shortened system lifespan.
- Possible reduction or loss of manufacturer warranty, depending on the manufacturer's maintenance requirements.
Preventative maintenance is one of the best ways to protect your investment, reduce operating costs and maximise the life of your solar hot water system.
