When Should a Kitchen Basket Waste Be Replaced?
A kitchen sink basket waste may need replacement if you have:
-
Water leaking underneath the sink
-
Water leaking around the waste flange
-
A loose basket waste
-
Corrosion or deterioration
-
A damaged or missing basket
-
A waste that no longer seals correctly
-
Cracked or damaged components
-
Perished seals
-
Water appearing inside the sink cabinet
-
An old waste fitting that has become difficult to clean or use
Replacing the complete fitting is often more reliable than attempting to reseal an old or deteriorated basket waste.
Standard Basket Waste Supplied
This product includes supply of one standard kitchen sink basket waste suitable for the existing compatible sink.
The replacement includes the removable basket or strainer used to catch larger food scraps while allowing water to drain through the sink.
The exact fitting used may vary depending on the existing sink configuration and compatibility.
Existing Waste Removal
The existing basket waste will be removed as part of the standard installation.
Where normally accessible, our plumber will:
-
Disconnect the existing sink trap
-
Remove the old basket waste
-
Clean the immediate sealing surface
-
Install the replacement basket waste
-
Seal and secure the fitting
-
Reconnect the existing trap
-
Fill the sink
-
Drain the sink
-
Check all completed connections for leaks
Existing Trap Reconnection
Standard installation includes reconnection to the existing accessible and serviceable kitchen sink trap.
Minor adjustment of the immediate waste pipework is included where reasonably required to reconnect the new basket waste.
If the trap itself is damaged, leaking or unsuitable for reuse, trap replacement is additional work unless specifically included.
Single & Double-Bowl Kitchen Sinks
This product is priced per basket waste.
For a single-bowl sink, one basket waste will normally be required.
For a double-bowl sink, you can purchase two replacements if both basket wastes need to be changed.
The existing double-bowl waste arrangement must be serviceable and suitable for reconnection.
JR's existing kitchen plumbing scope recognises both standard sink connection groups and double-bowl/twin-outlet arrangements.
What If the Trap Is Leaking?
A leak beneath the kitchen sink can come from more than the basket waste.
Possible leak sources can include:
If the existing trap or waste pipework is visibly defective, additional work may be required.
Sink Compatibility
Standard installation assumes the existing kitchen sink is:
-
Structurally sound
-
Securely installed
-
Compatible with a standard replacement basket waste
-
Accessible from underneath
-
Free from significant damage around the waste opening
-
Connected to serviceable existing drainage
Some designer, commercial or specialty sinks may use manufacturer-specific wastes that fall outside the standard product.
Existing Sink Condition
A replacement basket waste cannot correct damage to the sink itself.
If the sink is:
the sink may need replacement rather than simply installing a new basket waste.
Whatโs Not Included
Unless specifically stated or purchased separately, standard basket waste replacement does not include:
-
Kitchen sink replacement
-
Sink removal
-
Benchtop removal
-
Cabinetry removal or modification
-
Cutting cabinetry for access
-
Stone or benchtop alterations
-
New sink installation
-
Replacement of the existing trap
-
Major waste pipe alterations
-
Relocation of kitchen drainage
-
New drainage through walls or floors
-
Clearing blocked drains
-
Repair of damaged concealed drainage
-
InSinkErator installation or removal
-
Dishwasher plumbing alterations
-
Specialty or proprietary sink wastes
-
Designer finishes or colours
-
Commercial sink waste assemblies
-
Repair of cracked or damaged sinks
JR's wider scope similarly separates plumbing fixture work from cabinetry, benchtop and building alterations unless expressly included.
Blocked Kitchen Sinks
This product is for basket waste replacement, not drain clearing.
If the sink is draining slowly or completely blocked, the problem may be further down the waste pipe rather than with the basket waste itself.
Blocked drain clearing should be booked separately where required.
Dishwasher Connections
If a dishwasher waste hose is already connected to the existing under-sink waste plumbing, it can normally remain in place provided the existing arrangement is suitable.
Alteration or installation of new dishwasher plumbing is outside the basket waste replacement product.
Dishwasher connections are handled separately within JR's kitchen plumbing services.
InSinkErator / Food Waste Disposers
A standard basket waste and an InSinkErator food waste disposer are different installations.
If the sink currently has an InSinkErator or you want to convert the sink to a food waste disposer, use the InSinkErator Installation product instead.
JR's kitchen scope treats InSinkErator and additional waste connections separately from a standard sink connection.
Testing After Installation
After fitting the replacement basket waste, JR Gas & Water will:
-
Fill the kitchen sink
-
Check the seal around the new basket waste
-
Release the water
-
Check drainage flow
-
Inspect the waste connection underneath
-
Check accessible joints for leaks
-
Confirm normal basket operation

Kitchen Basket Waste Replacement FAQs
Does the price include the new basket waste?
Yes. One standard replacement kitchen basket waste is supplied and installed.
Do you remove the old basket waste?
Yes. Removal of the existing basket waste is included.
Is the basket/strainer included?
Yes. The standard replacement fitting includes its matching removable basket or strainer.
Do you reconnect the plumbing underneath?
Yes. The existing serviceable and accessible sink trap is reconnected as part of the installation.
Is a new sink trap included?
No. The existing trap is reused where suitable.
If the existing trap is damaged, leaking or unsuitable, replacement can be completed as additional work.
What if I have a double kitchen sink?
This product covers one basket waste. If both sides of a double-bowl sink require replacement, purchase two.
My sink is leaking underneath. Is it definitely the basket waste?
Not necessarily. A leak can also come from the trap, waste pipework, dishwasher connection, mixer hoses or other fittings.
Can you replace the waste without replacing the sink?
Yes. That is exactly what this product is designed for, provided the existing sink is in suitable condition.
Does this include unblocking the sink?
No. Drain clearing is separate from basket waste replacement.
Can you replace an InSinkErator with a basket waste?
That involves a different under-sink waste configuration and should be treated as an InSinkErator removal/conversion rather than a standard basket waste replacement.
Do you test it afterwards?
Yes. The sink is filled and drained and the completed basket waste and accessible drainage connections are checked for leaks.
